Is it a trick of perspective or are the wings in the top picture of the F-35 longer than normal?

It certainly looks like it, but aren't the A version wings longer anyway?

If it's the photo you're refering to, that looks like the C (judging by the twin nose wheels and catapult bar attached to the leg) which does have a bigger wing.

Yeap thats the housing for the arrestor hook, the hook is anchored against the main gear bulkhead

I don't think so.  The wingtip that is visible is square, whereas the fictional F-53 is raked.

A google image search quickly reveals the answer, it is the F-35C.  Other photos of it show the fin flashes better.  In the February Air International there's a photo of the last test F-35C arriving at it's destination (NAS Patuxent River) and you can see the bulge in the pic quite well.

really showing off the bigger wings. The larger wings (along with the most fuel carried by any JSF variant-no gun/lift fan) will make it the longest ranged variant and the best turning variant as well, though it costs it trans sonically.

The C wing has a noticably larger chord too, so much so that it stretches past the LE of the tailplane!

What are the two longitudinal bulges inboard of the intakes though?

True but it does have an effect on the agility as the A's aimed as an F-16 replacement, where as the C is Hornet replacement for Strike and Interceptor roles.

They may mix n match features in the next decade once the normal development schedule is completed as they simply don't have the resources to look into hybrids until they have the performance and programming done for the thre main variants completed. However once that is done we might see some work into evolving the range into new models to target other custumers.

Turkey has been said to be interested in the C but its been just a few scattered reports here and there, so nothing solid.

Looks like the same problems are repeating itself.
The Gloster Meteor (FR.9 VZ608) tested the RB.108 engine as used in the Short SC.I VTOL research aircraft during the 1950s. This aircraft is on display at the Newark Air Museum in Nottinghamshire.
There's an interesting article in 'JETS May/June 2013' issue.
