That's nothing new other than the weapons fit. There was a version called the Defender marketed in the 80's if I remember correctly, which had some export success. Various other light aircraft have also been fitted with weapons, especially light aircraft used at basic trainers or liaison aircraft. The USAF has used several which include the 0-2 and the Bird Dog.

And, if you want to go back to World War II, the Civil Air Patrol began arming their heavier aircraft, like Grumman Widgeons, for anti-submarine duties since they couldn't always rely on destroyers or service aircraft being in the immediate area.
