I agree, a nice 1/144, AFFORDABLE Seamaster would be nice... Trumpeter? You listening?

I still can't get over box-scales. As far as I know, the reason was just that; to fit in whatever boxes they had. I imagine the boss vs. engineer discussion would have gone something like this:

B: "How big can you make it to fit in this box?"
E: "Does it have to fill it?"
B: "Yeah, the kids want value for the money!"
E: "But, that works out to 1/113 (or 1/166, or 1/193, etc.)..."
B: "Perfect!"
E: "Huh?"
B: "It will be right in scale with the rest of the kits in this line!"
E: "No, it will be the SAME SIZE, not he same scale!"
B: "Exactly! Just like I said! Now, get right on it!"
E: <Grumble...>  :banghead:

Now you know why, when they say: "They don't make 'em like that anymore!" it's not always a bad thing!

Why do they choose odd scales?

It's a case of why 'DID' they choose them.

Those 'fit the box' kits were moulded in the late 50s and early 60s and the reasons were as Rheged and Faust described. It was more important back then to stuff a predictable number of boxes on shelves and into cartons. They've learnt some  lessons since then, thank goodness.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

Great work on a tough kit! We really need an affordable new kit of this great aircraft.

Some time ago I found the Mach2 for 54 euros (72 USD) which is not too unreasonable given the size;
I am currently building it, but without What-If-ing (only the colouring will be unrealistic : I'll have it yellow)

Very good looking and believable. Great work on an ancient kit!

Thanks guys!

The Seamaster is still probably the best looking boat in the skies, if you ask me. Although, I must say that I do like those Albatross boats the Russians have.

I stumbled across a Seamaster in 1/72 Vacform on eBay it wasn't too pricey, but I've never built a vacform kit before ,so it should be still there.

That'll be the Airmodel one, avoid like the plague!

On the other hand you could have my part built one for free! I spent ages on it but still not pleased with it in the slightest. I think I've still got some of the assemblies and other bits stacked away.

Thank you ,are there any tips on building vacform kits?
I know the thought of scratch building the Be A40 Albatross /Mermaid was on my lists when I first joined this site. I've seen desktop wooden models and a  fellow Whiffer did a CGI picture ,Anigrand do the only 1/144 kit priced at $98.

Well -- hold on there Kit, it could also be the Combat Models one.  I got the Anigrand 1/72 one in the stash, from one of us on this forum ---
If I'm not building models, I'm out riding my dirtbike

In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

I hope it's better than the Airmodel one then, that's diabolical!

It's amazing to me that they even made a vac-form of that thing!  I have heard that the Airmodel isn't the best piece of Vacform out there, though!

I think a nice 1/144 Trumpeter or HobbyBoss kit would be nice. Then you'd have room for a whole fleet of what-ifs; Elint, tanker, gunship () medevac, etc. The old one I used is just too much of a junker to bother making more than one of.

Heck, it would make a nice private air yacht too. Maybe in Virgin colours?

It isn't, I had one part built for many years until I happily scrapped it when I bought a Mach 2 'injection' one a year or so ago. [The word 'injection' here is used in it's widest possible sense......]
