The matter of tank development makes an interesting contrast actually with Paddy Griffin's "Battle Tactics of the Western Front: British Army's Art of Attack, 1916-18" where you come away with the reverse impression - once they got organised, the British Army did rather better than they were always portrayed as doing.   Rather like Brown's "British Logistics of the Western Front" (fascinating book BTW and I simply cannot recommend it enough, it's well written and brings an otherwise rather dry subject alive).

Agree with you on those two books, and my reading of WWI would make me agree with Griffin's view

Oops, that should be "Griffith" of course.  My bad.

I'm surprised you've read Brown's book.  It's relatively rare (and expensive!  :banghead: ).  I bought a copy of his PhD Thesis when it appeared on a book stall at a history conference and never regretted it.  I met him a few years later at the same conference where he was giving a paper on WWI logistics.   Interesting bloke.  After his PhD he'd gone into Wall Street.   I hope he survived the GFC.   We had quite a natter about his book and he was surprised to meet me, as we'd exchanged a few emails before hand (and admitted he'd been surprised to received them from downunder!).   It is one of the better logistics histories (he blames his wife for how well it's written, apparently she was a ruthless editor!).  Again, can't recommend it enough!

A friends son was doing a History PhD at Uni and lent me it one Summer break a couple of years ago. He specialised in WWI and is now working in the City. Not sure if it was his or had been borrowed from the library. Believe it or not you can now get a Kindle addition for £55. Must admit that the £70 odd pound they wanted then meant it didn't enter my personal library. There's been a few books published on British logistics since.

Rheged minimus used the logistics of the Falklands episode as his undergraduate thesis.  It can't have been too bad as he ended up with a 2:1 degree and a place on a masters course.  I'll see if there is any way of making his work available to people on this site.  Rheged minor is doing the same masters, his thesis was Anglo Scottish border warfare 1300 to 1605,  if anyone is interested.

I hope he mentions the oft forgotten "fact" that all that nastiness could have been avoided if they'd synchronised opening hours

I can't remember the full details, but I think haggis rustling came into the story at some point......

Whilst looking for presents for other people, I spotted an absolute bargain in TKMaxx:

Classic World War II Aircraft Cutaways by Bill Gunston (Octopus books)

for a princely fiver!    (RRP: £16.99)

It's a great book, taking contemporary cutaways of planes and engines from The Aeroplane and Flight magazines and explaining the history of the subjects, the artists and the process. Fascinating read, useful as a modelling reference and I daresy a slice of nostalgia for anyone old enough too.

I'd have picked up more of them but there was only one copy in the shop.... :banghead:

What about the problems with sporran over-breeding?  ;)

Just need to lengthen the hunting season. I mean deep fried sporran sounds like a Glaswegian delicacy anyway

I spotted Andrew Appleton's 'Filton Airfield through time' in the local WH Smith today. It's an excellent history of the now sadly closed airfield, with lots of photos and just a small amount of descriptive text. Could do with a few more maps to show how the airfield developed post-WWII, but there's one really ineteresting photo showing the V Bomber QRA pads built just west of the A38 during the 50s!

STILL haven't got my Lightning F2A and the local Hobbycraft didn't know what I'm talking about when I asked for one.  :banghead:
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Kit
