Never in my twenty-four years have I built a plastic model kit.

My family, having been apprised of this, gave me for Christmas the Airfix 1:600 kit of HMS Hood, which I note is described as having a difficulty level of '3'. Whatever that means. Is anyone able to advise how successful a total novice - i.e. me - might be at building this kit?

Not too difficult.  I would (not too thickly) paint everything on the sprues in the base colour, then paint the eeny tiny parts in their final colours.  This will make things much easier when you come to assembly!

Practise assemble (ie: dry fit) parts together to check for fitting issues, and allow decent drying times for small parts, and load bearing structures, lest your model look melty!

Above all, enjoy yourself!  Remember, it is a hobby...

I suppose a bit of patience can be beneficial.

I built most of those Airfix ships as a nipper in the early 60's. With hindsight my fingers were smaler which helped but best of all my mind was uncluttered and I just enjoyed myself without worrying about accuracy or anything like that.

Just build it and enjoy it - then play with it in the bath  ;D ;D

My best is tip when you get to a section of the build get evey part, (after you paint them!), off the as you are ready to test fit it then attach it. Just get out the spues and put them in order of which part will be used 1st, 2nd, etcetera.
As sure as you cut a piece loose and set it on the benc/table top/floor it will wander off. I lost a week on a manifold for a model car engine, trying to get a replacement then starting on a cstom built one before the original popped up.  :banghead: :banghead:

Problem is it's 50 or so now Lance  :banghead: I'm starting to catch Radish up, and before anyone says you can't catch a living person up age wise, well you can. If I'm 25 and my dad is 50 then I am 50% younger then he is but when I'm 50 and he is 75 then I'm 33% younger  ;D
