hi there,

do you people know of instances of aircraft models in art pieces ?

It would be contemporary art, given the historic ancienty of plastic modelling  ;)

and given that it's not the usual use and situation of models, it has something to do with What If, doesn't it?  ;D

For example, here is a Christmas tree at London's Tate Gallery in 2007, made up by Fiona Banner:

She seems to have a large collection :

She also uses real (decommissioned) aircraft as art material : I have seen the Harrier with the bird of prey painting scheme (but not lied underneath it ...) : definitely an idea for a What-If decoration!

anyone knows others?

She needs to learn about painting............
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Cannot remember the name, but there was an artist in the early 90s I believe who used Tamiya 1/35 military figures in dioramas as art.
There are no good kits, bad kits or grail kits, just kitbash fodder.

An artist named Peter Shulman has created an outdoor installation type work of art containing over 60,000 figures and more than 4,800 scale models that cover over 30 acres: http://peterswar.com/

sometimes some artists don't paint  ;)

personnaly I can understand people like Tophe who have their constructions in just one colour, just to emphasize shape;
it is indeed a bit different from decoration-WhIf, which is great too of course

may be there dimensions of WhIffing : colours, shapes, histories, ... and you may explore one or the other or several at ounce

I know of Kris Kuksi who is doing quite incredibly impressive things with figures and tanks and stuff, like this :

or that, with an airship:

or even a F-104:

is it him that you meant?

It was this quote that cracked me up:

Banner, 41, who was unveiling her festive contribution today, said: "It was a major research job to establish exactly what planes are in military service worldwide.

Somebody please show her a copy of Jane's All the World's Aircraft - she'll be devastated....... ;D

But the real question is: what is she going to do with all the models when they take the tree down?

She'll be even more devastated if she learns that the blurred foreground model in the third piccie down on the Mail page is a Hunter, and I don't think they're still in operational service with anyone still, are they?

I've seen something similar before.  An old S-58 was mounted upside down which supposedly turned it into art.

I thought that was b*llocks then, this is just the same idea warmed over.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

The MOD have been using a couple for the last few years! And Lebanon have four still officially in service.
Some of my models can be found on my Flickr album >>>HERE<<<

The MoD ones are civvie owned and flown AFAIK so aren't really 'operational'. I didn't know about the Lebanese ones though, thanks.

thanks for sharing the link; there's no obligation to like it anyway. ;)

A nearly useful variation can be seen here though :
