FAA fixed wing ASW projects of the 1960's and 1970's

were there any fixed wing ASW aircraft projected for use on the CVA-01, other than developed versions of the fairey gannet, as opposed to ASW helos?

i am thinking of a/c like the S-2 tracker and the S-3 viking, btw.

i know that the bundesmarine actively looked at the S-3 but bought the atlantique instead.

There were competitors to the Gannet, but these were part of the same competition. I remember a Blackburn design, which looked very similar to the Gannet (but less stout), and the there way the Seamew as a cheap, slow and very simple ASW aircraft. Looked wacky with its narrow fuselage and fixed landing gear - but apart from that I am not aware of dedicated, carrier-capable ASW aircraft with full equipment on board?

There's a few that have come to light in some recent publications Trev.  The S-3 has been offered to the FAA and RAF on several occassions, an RAF version gets a mention in Battle Flight.

The recent The Admirality and AEW book had several options to replace the Gannet AEW.3.  The Blackurn P.139, conversions of the Dominie, Buccaneer and HS.748 were all investigated, along with others.  Well worth a look if you haven't got it.

Nope we had already decided to go with Helo's for ship based ASW warfare, one option however is the ASW Chinook as it was a Choice between the Sea King and the Chinook in the early 60s. If you recall we were also planning to build Escort cruisers to work alongside CVA-01 and effectively take over their ASW work.

However should CVA-01 have entered service in the 70's then its quite possible we may have taken some S-3 Vikings to perform longer range ASW work with our shift in focus to the North Atlantic rather than Empire. In the 80's the development of our excellent towed array sonar might have also prompted their purchase.

From a Whiff point of view then adaption of the P139 design for ASW is quite plausible as it might have also been viable as a Tracker replacement for those Navies still with light fleet carriers.

i think i can find some stuff on the P139 on my bookshelf, though it would probably involve TOO much scratchbuilding.

however, as i have a surplus of S-3 kits [hasegawa and airfix] think it would be better to go that way.  besides which as i have most of the microscale decal sheets that have featured the S-3, could whiff a FAA S-3 on board CVA-01, that accidentially got zapped by a USN S-3 squadron  on a visit to mayport, FL sometime in the early 1980's.
