Even the biggest freighters only have ten or fifteen crew members. A cruise ship probably needs only a few people to actually run the ship. Store rooms full of food and drinks......

As long as it isn't a Carnival Cruise ship!  :o Thing might break down or burn out from under you!

I saw your post and mulled on it overnight.  I was thinking on similar lines to kerick, small fleets of ships, something on the lines of the disaster movie 2012, maybe not as sophisticated as that.  Alternativley, airships, sailing the earth for weeks on end, looking for the promised lands.  I'm not going to build either so anyone can use the ideas.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Depending on how many of you you are you could live on an oil rig

Wandered into my local entertainer and they had some toy soldiers, fire fighters dino hunters . Am not a 100 per cent sure but their accessories looked 1 25  ish  might solve the lack of zombie hunting accessories

kerick

I was thinking of the oil rig too. Trick would be getting out to it and back. Think of a dio with a rig surrounded by small boats and defenders walking the catwalks.
I like the airship idea. Steal the Goodyear blimp and sail about looking for resources. ;D

Keeping supplied on a oil rig might be challenging but then getting food for any amount of time no matter where you are might be troublesome. At least you can fish off an oil rig.
The only difficulty I see is the slow speed and limited range of these airships. Fuel may not be a problem but getting the gas bag topped off might take some plotting and planning!

Hang around the Texas oil fields. I hear its a by product.

Aircraft: desperately vulnerable when they're on the ground unless you've got a 100% secure base area to operate from. Helicopters are most practical for insertion/rescue of recce/scavenger teams, but need a good supply of fuel and the technical expertise to keep them running.

Boats/Ships: excellent idea. They remain afloat and livable even when they have a technical problem, they're easily isolated from zombie populations, and even if attacked when tied up alongside, you only have to move 20ft away from shore to re-isolate yourself. If you have a "mother ship" that stays permanently off-shore and uses small boats to deploy/recover shore parties, then even if a shore party is overwhelmed, they still can't get back to the ship because, as zombies, they can't operate the boat.

From what I understand an aircraft needs a ground/maintenance crew of at least four times as many people as the actual aircraft crew. And helicopters and military jack the number of ground personnel even higher.
Even if you have a large low maintenance ship if your going to have shore parties it would pay to have trained 'Mud Pounders' on board for your on shore excursions/resupply raids. I mean most Navy Ships have Marine troops on board for defense and possible shore action.
I am very happy with the builds going on here and hope to see many more. Thanks people for making the Zombie Theme Build so good.

On the ships in Zed world.
In the book World War Z, there is bit about a nuclear submarine that was sitting on the bottom, not too deep.
The crew hear scrapes and banging on the hull..they work out that the Zeds are walking along the seabed and blundering into the sub. Needless to say they get underway to "clear the barnacles". There is a later back up bit about a group watching 100's of Zeds just walking out of the ocean.

As the zeds have no need to breath, they can "survive" walking around quite deep water and can cross distances but nothing clear about how deep is crush depth on your average Zed.
The Noahs out there must be having a smorgasbord...(Oh.. Noah is an Aussie rhyming slang term for shark.. as in Noah's Ark)

However a Ship would offer great deals of isolation and protection... seabed wanderers aside and compared to an aircraft would be much lower in maintenance.
Must rewatch Waterworld for some ideas.

Z Wars? Who wrote the book and is it still available. I'm always looking for a good read.

World War Z By Max Brooks
is still available.

Being made (badly by the sound of it) into a movie... well the movie has the same name as the book but according to the pundits.. little else.
Who cares if it is a good Zombie romp.

Mossie

There are a few books in the series, they had some copies in the University book shop a few weeks ago and I thought about picking them up:
