Zombie Build 2: What to do with a collectable?

So I laid on the main color. Ford and Chrysler were miffed from Richard Petty switching to fro then back again in 1969 and 1970. Even worse was Petty's trademarking of the signature Petty Blue. But how could I do anything but ...



... for the original color? Now this is the point where normally car builders let it gas out then polish it to death. This is the original color but just retouched or resprayed some time by a "In By 9, Out By 5" shop in it's a 40 years. So it will not look polished at all!

Now believe it or not this isn't the front seat setting on a Kleenex.



It's the front seat sitting on 2 layers of Kleenex glued to the floor. I know the 70 Road Runner didn't come with carpet but I have a plan I think you'll like.

So the aging of the paint has started. I lightly fogged some white over it and then 'polished' it with a red scrubber pad. It made the color dull down to a darker look on the sides and lighter on top... just like 'real' old cars.

I started on finishing the interior floor. I glued down two layers of Kleenex first then let it set and cleaned up the edges. Then I cut the foil from cigarette packs into slightly oversized mats, cut Kleenex smaller, (Talk about fun! ), folded the edges of the foil over the Kleenex and glued it. Let it sit and dry then pressed it to shape on the sections of floor then put dabs of white glue down and set it in place.

This simulates some sound and heat deadening mats I helped a friend install in his car.

Then I moved on to the rear 'Package tray', that little shelf where anyone with a half brain would never store a package.   I'm looking for a look of the cardboard cover which is coming apart with one speaker and grill missing. So her I go with the 'Tidy paper' again. This is not a real 'Barn find' one-owner pampered car by any means. The fun will be getting the color of the raw cardboard and the faded black top layer.

It's funny how the seats all wore out at different rates on these cars. Sometimes the rear seat broke down more quickly for some reason.   So I thought some different colored seats front and back were called for.


If you ever left a car with the old cardboard liners in the rear package tray with the windows cracked or down when there was a heavy overnight fog you probably soon faced a disaster in the back window if the next day was sunny. It might look like this after a few years.

Woah ! Nice work ! I love to see cars in the in-between phase of a resto....I mean, who hasn't had their own muscle car in a similar state ?

I'm thinking of yet another color for the bottom cushion of the rear seat. I mean they were separate and you might find two different good ones in two different cars.

So the first coat of paint on the bottom cushion. Need to go buy ink and the Instant Rust kit. And odorless oil paint thinner.

My youngest son (16) is in town to visit for Spring Break so no progress to report. He is only here until Friday.

Progress continues which I guess beats the opposite which would be Congress!
The engine is going together and as usual there is a big seamline down the engine from front to rear. So I had to go after that with my little files and sanding sticks before I could get any serious work done.
The engine will be the one really nice new looking part on this car for now. It seems everyone that starts building or restoring a car goes gung-ho on the engine first. They get it perfect then plant it in the car and it dawns on them how much worse it makes the engine bay and the rest of the car look. So then they pull the engine and start on the engine bay. Then the front suspension looks like poo so they do that.
Back to the build. Now that the Polar Bears are done migrating through the wheat I need to get to the hobby center and get supplies. Mostly paints, odorless oil paint thinner and some rusting supplies.

This is the jugsaw puzzle the two young men found in the Leawood Kansas garage when they went looking for parts to repair their truck.


The Chassis is in black paint and the suspension is going on. Working on some strange 'last minute add-ons' to give it that special flavor.

So I got the first paint onto the chassis and suspension.

It is a great kit so far except for one common shortcut the manufacturers make all the time. The exhaust was molded on as part of the rear axle. So it took a little filing and sanding to get that off as I want to run the simpler side exit exhaust with glasspack mufflers if any at all. Needs a lot of aging and weathering but it is a good start.
