Can anyone please recommend available spray can paints that closely match the Gulf Oil colours. I'm laid up with severe back pain and can't get out so need to order.

Sorry, can't suggest paints, but I would like to offer sympathy for your current  state.

A recent copy of Motor Sport magazine had a feature on a guy who owns LOADS of Gulf cars, including a GT40 and a 917 (gnashing of teeth mode off...) I'll see if I can find it out as I think the actual colour shades were mentioned. Of course they'll be 1960s-70s period paints so they may not be that easy, or cheap, to get hold of.

Look forward to info. If I can just sculpt a John Wyer figure in 1/48 :-\

Found it!  ;D

The colours came from the Llewellyn Ryland range and were called 3707 Zenith Blue and 3957 Tangerine. L R's page is here :-

http://www.llewellyn-ryland.co.uk/standardrange.html but they no longer manufacture paints, only gel coats and stuff.

Apparently they are Porsche standard colours these days, called 'Gulf Blue' and 'Gulf Orange'. Tricky, eh?  ;D

I bet they're darned expensive from Porsche though and I doubt Halfords sell them either, but it seems the nearest equivalents may be Ford Bermuda Blue and Peugeot Seville Orange, and they do look very close to me.

John Wyer? I met him when I was on the GT40 project in the mid 60s.  ;D

It'll need to be a TALL figure, he was about 6'4" I think! He had this 'look' when things weren't going well that would melt stainless steel at around 100 yards!

HAH!  ;D

It looks like you may be able to get them as a Morgan colour! At the Geneva Motor Show Morgan announced a special Gulf version of their 3 wheeler in the blue and orange.  ;D

Fantastic information. Thank you. I have a DVD on the Gulf GT-40/917 in action. I see what you refer to about Mr Wyer. Missed his vocation as a House Master ;).

You had me worried for a moment there, Kit!   Morgans are specially designed and crafted to look their best in British Racing Green................although the gloss Prussian Blue Morgan Plus 4 my brother in law used to own looked very good too

One of these days I'm going to bite the bullet and get into airbrushing. Sooo hard to break old habits (makes coffee, lights fag).

I've seen a site where a Seiran has its wings and floats removed for submarine stowage. If I go with the Gulf Oil idea I might fish around for a transporter with stowed parts being unloaded.

Not spraypaint cans, so probably not what you're looking for, but just in case as it's certainly sprayable:

I  love the way the small print says that these paints have NOTHING to do with theGulf Oil Co.  ;D

If I remember correctly, they used to sell the same set under the "Gulf" nomenclature, just like they do with other sets, so I think they got told off . I guess they have the same issues with copyrights as our profilers over here do ;D

Isn't that just SO silly? As if you could copyright a colour! It's corporate greed gone raving mad.

It's the name "Gulf" that's the trademark, not the colours themselves.
