They built a big-scale repeating crossbow for a UK experimental archaeology program years ago, which was pretty much like that design except that it had a rotating drum with a notch in it at the bottom of the hopper to smooth out the feed and regularise the rate at which bolts were delivered to the firing position.

Everyone, including the team that built it, were sceptical, especially about the wooden chain, but when they test-fired it, it worked like a dream: fast, powerful and reliable. Get a bunch of craftsmen building those 24/7 for a few years and learning as they went and you'd have a very serious weapon.

EDIT: just noticed that the one in the plans below has a rotating drum feed too: I didn't spot it at first because the one of the TV show was much bigger.

How big of bolts? I mean 1/4 inch by 2 foot might not do a lot. Now 2 inch by five foot might clear a few paths!  :o

This is exactly what I was trying to remember!  Thank you for running it to earth for me, Weaver and Lenny.  Assuming that you had enough bolts, you could quite ruin someone's afternoon with a battery of these devices.

Hmmmm... A little "Dukes of Hazzard" technology thrown in like dynamite with percussion caps strapped on the tips...

In the book "Lucifer's Hammer" the survivors of a huge asteroid strike end up using fixed crossbows made from car leaf springs and cable to fire bolts made from rebar. Also I remember a story of the VC during the Vietman war using crossbows fireing rebar. No one believed the intel until a chopper came back from a mission with a piece of rebar sticking out the bottom. Crossbows were horrendous weapons that changed the warfare of the time. It completely eliminated the armored knight on horseback. It would look crazy mounted on a car or truck!

I think that Demond Baguely's book  THE HIGH CITADEL  involves , among other excitements, a scratch-built crossbow and a trebuchet throwing 40 gallon oil drums of flaming kerosene.  I can't check this 'cos someone has swiped my copy.  Can anyone confirm this?

well further i have been given a RSOV, up here at hollybush, which is essentially a long wheel based landrover defender but it has a good engine bay which seems a bit sad not to see so, i have started the build with the view of showing the landrover broken down as it does a sweep of a barrier wall in a "safe zone" so its called the only emergency service in post zombie UK "the AA", after their claim a few years ago to be the uk 4th emergancy service after the police fire and ambulance, but before the coastguard etc!!!!
The recovery van will be the marp which has been badly hand painted by some wag in yellow paint and a big brush with the AA markings on it.
Something like this

Honestly, it's the honest ones you have to watch out for!!!
