Just had a silly thought. Cross-kitting both of the recent Airfix Lightnings. This way I could end up with a Six gun aircraft. The F2 could carry four guns when it has the small tank so with the long tank and a gun pack in the front of the tank if could be call a 2B, or not  ;D
Perhaps I will just pencil it in to my ideas list for now.....

I know it's in a book I have around here somewhere....

Alright, alright, we get the point. Now rub it out.

No need to cross kit.  The Airfix F6 is their F2A with an added sprue (coded E) for the Red Tops, overwing tanks and extended cable ducts.

There's a BAC drawing of what they say is an F3, with the developed wing of the F6 and the big belly tank. Guns in the lower position (they were deleted from the upper on the F3 IIRC replaced by the electronics for Red Top) and Red Top missiles relocated to underwing pylons inboard of the wheel wells.

Extrapolate forward with the F53 and you've a four cannon aircraft with overwing rockets and underwing bombs too.

Sounds like an interesting drawing because of the inner wing pylon.

.....AND over wing tanks too?

No tanks on the drawing, I think it predates them, although there was a lot of wind tunnel testing of various tank layouts.

Don't have it to hand - p.124 of the Wilson book.

As luck would have it, I DO have the book to hand (about a foot away from my keyboard...) and I see just what you mean. It looks like they could have had more guns in the front end of the belly tank as well.

How about Red Tops in the 'normal' position and under the wing roots too?

Too draggy, plus they'd be to close together?

Better one in the inboard plus another pair on the outer pylons that they developed for the Saudi ones.

Too close?  :o

On a Sea Vixen they're almost touching each other!

Ah, but that's de Havilland, not English Electric... and apparently the Lords of the Admiralty have some unique dispensations...  ;)

Gondor

On the Vixen the Red Tops are side by side, the drawing Lee referred to of the Lightning has them almost behind each other which would be a difficulty if the Fuselage mounted missiles were not fired first. Saying that, would the exhaust of the missile cause problems for the front of the missile behind it?

On that drawing, which I have right here, they're about the same distance apart spanwise, as they are on the Sea Vixen.

The same issue re the exhaust of one impinging on the other would obtain with either aircraft type.

As I got paid today I visited the Crecy web site and ordered the "Teach For The Sky" book, tomorrow on the way home I shall take a slight detour into Edinburgh to Wonderland to purchase a few model related items and maybe some plastic.
Checked the "Nose" from my Prone Meteor purchase against the Xtrakit Supermarine Scimitar, looks as if it can be transplanted reasonably well, the question now becomes if it's to be built in a similar way to the Prone Meteor with a normal Pilot or with the Prone Pilot as the only Pilot as with Kit's build  :-\
