BN Jetlander AEW.3

   I got to wondering what alternative the RN would have to operating AEW helicopters from their new carriers. Obviously it would have to be either VTOL or STOL, with the latter more likely to give a performance improvement over a helicopter. So what STOL aircraft could do it – the BN Islander came to mind, but a little underpowered perhaps for a ski-jump takeoff. No problem, swap twin prop for quad jet

Heh - nice idea and not without precedent since there really was an AEW Defender prototype with the same radar as the AEW Sea King.

OR, you could have put the engines above the wing to give USB for real STOL.... (Now that'd be something to see take off!  )
