Four For Telford?

As most of you know I build slowly, almost as slow as a snail walking backwards!

So I have set myself a task to try and build four aircraft for Telford this year, three of them for the Project Cancelled theme.

Three of the builds come from the excellent book "The Admiralty and AEW" while the fourth and range from easy to fairly difficult for me. The fourth build will be for the What-if display although it may take up some space.

1) The easy build: Manga Models Fairly Spearfish with an AN/APS-20radome under it.

2) BAe 146 AEW, page 34: This should be fairly easy as well as it combines parts from two plastic kits with a saddle tank being the largest scratch built part to add.

3) Sidetrack Sea Harrier FA.2: Work has already started on this aircraft using the Xtrakit version of the Sea Harrier FA.2 and making use of the tail boom from an old Bobcat Harrier T4. Some people will be interested in how it turns out as there is more work than shown in the book.

4) E-10: This is a build I have been talking about for about a year or so based on a four engined DC-10. Base kit is a Revell DC-10 with engines from Braz and a Rotordome from an old Revell AWACS.

I am slow, lazy and have lots of more fun things to do but I have started this thread with the intention of using it to get my donkey in gear and get something done!
Photographs will of course be provided in due course.

Sounds great.......!!! I have a habit of starting stuff n being slow to finish them.....for me there is so much inspiration on this site that I am easily sidetracked......

Gondor, I hope the AEW 146 gets built. I did one several years ago. The difference with mine was I went with the Swedish 'Phalcon' phased array idea rather than the usual rotodome...Would have been cool to display them together.

Lancer, the 146 is the first one that I am going to build as it could be one of the quickest to build, next on the production line will be the Spearfish with the E-10 and Sidetrack Sea Harrier having bits and pieces done as and when.

Minimal work carried out today, separated the rotodome and support from the Hawkeye kit and removed the 146 from its plastic wrapping. The refuelling probe doesn't look too difficult to reproduce so I will photograph it and scan it into my computer so that I don't have to buy just the TNT boxing of the aircraft. That could be handy for the proposed AEW version in "The Air Staff and AEW" on page 42 which would require the scratch building of the nose and tail radomes  :-\

Excellent News Gondor  (Of course i'm biased as 3 are for the Project Cancelled SIG display  ;D )

Nice move to to post up the builds as a prompt on the forum as i really should do so with mine, also acts as a reminder to the rest of us which subjects you are building and that we have a deadline to work to with our own builds  :banghead:.

Hank, the model show displays often act as an incentive and to keep us focused especially SMW as that tends to be a specific theme set generallys at the previous years show and generally sets a tone from what you build during that comming year. Thats why these threads are a handy reminder to the rest of us to get back on track.

THis thread will also let others know what I am building for SMW so there are not two of anything turning up!

Was that the Swedish Erieye or the Israeli Phalcon? They are both phased array but different in mounting.

I realised last night that I could not proceed with the BAe 146  build due to a lack of weights for the nose :(

One trip to a fishing store provided several 2/4oz weights for 30pence each so I can get cracking with the builds I have planed right now

When thinking of a new place to live modellers should AWAYS consider the proximity or otherwise of fishing shops! Any further away than 400 yards is too far.........
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

This particular show was 15 miles away in Falkirk, but then I did do some food shopping there as the TESCO store has the marmalade I like, lemon no bits, and I got to see my girlfriend as well so it was a worthwhile trip.

The Wooksta!

Keep an eye out for discarded wheel balances.  They're a lead amalgam and thus useful for noseweights, once you've flattened them with a hammer and cut them up.

Flattening things with hammers is a good way of getting rid of frustration.

A trip to your local tyre fitters may be worthwhile in this context. Sometimes they'll GIVE discarded tyre weights away just so they don't have to go through the currentlt required paperwork to get rid of them in the proper way.

That's how I got my last lot, plus I "had" to sign the petition against the possible redevelopment of the site. He's not the sort of guy you can have a logical difference of opinion with  ;)

As Lee says - frustration + 12lb club hammer = bliss
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Pictures later but I have successfully put bits of plastic together for the first time since the Scottish National at Perth

This little Revell BAe 146 is a real gem and goes together easily. I have the undercarriage bays installed and the weights is glued in place after threading it with a length of plastic to help hold it where I want it to be. Pieces of eight plastic card have been stuck to the inside of the windows so they can be filled and decals used for any that are needed at the end of the build. I have put the wing parts together as well! Really starting to feel positive about this build and that I may actually finish it.
