I'm looking for decals for the Phantom FG.1 as used by the FAA. I've found one set from AlmarkS: on eBay
Hannants lists a few more, but those are all FG.1 in RAF service. I can get the AlmarkS sheet from the Aviation Megastore, I was just wondering if there are any other choices.

There were only three FAA Sqdn's that flew the FG1, 700P NAS which was the trials unit, 767 NAS which was the training unit and the only operational unit 892 NAS, which is the one depicted on the Almark sheet.

767 had a really good yellow flying bird on the fins of their aircraft and someone did a decal sheet of that a long while ago. I know they did for sure because I built an FG1 model in that cshme in flying mode with wire supports stuffed up its jetpipes. I'm DARNED if I can remember who did it though and I can't recall ever seeing one since.

700P had an orange diamond on their fin containing a black silhouette of 'The Phantom' carried by more than one Phantom crew as a badge.

All piccies I trawled off the Net.

The fin markings could be home printed but all of them have large aircraft numbers in white, which are almost darned impossible by that method I'm afraid.

[Later] 892 flew with various additions at different times in their lives, notably the 'Jubilee Nose' stripe that's seen on quite a few photos of their FG1s. I'm also reminded that the Fujumi FG1 kit came with various markings, including 767's bird and the 'Jubilee Nose' marks for 892 as well.

Think the yellow bird option may be in one of the Fujimi kits.

Its the name of the F-4K boxing in fact, the Silver Jubilee one being the FG1 but that only has 892 markings and a couple of RAF units.

Modeldecal did an early sheet with the 767 sqdn Yellow Bird (for the Frog & Revell kits i guess).

You actually get the FAA toom units on the rub down decals in the maintrack Project-X Hawker P1154(RN)

That must have been the one I used.

I've got almost every Modelcal sheet but didn't find that one when I went through therm about an hour ago.

Set #2

# 2? Darn it, no wonder I couldn't find it, I've still got the USAF and Marines bits left over!

They re-printed #1, with all the Lightning Squadron markings, it was a pity they didn't re-do #2 as well.

Got a number of 892 NAS decals, Fujimi kit and Modeldecal. If you want them, they're yours, no charge.

Thanks for the input everyone. I've decided to go for an 892 sqn aircraft, fits best with the backstory I have in mind for my Buccaneer build.

Hi Harro

You know that the 892sqdn markings of the Black Omega carried by the Phantom FG-1 was choosen as it was the last letter in the Greek Alphabet and 892's toom were going to be the Last FAA fixed wing carrier squadron. The Navy applied the Omega to the SHAR FA2 of 801 Sqdn during its last year to represent the same tone.

Whilst colourful they do have a rather sombre meaning and its worth bearing in mind when modelling FAA What-if subjects especially when working to the premise that the CATOBAR carrier fleet was not canned and lived on past the mid 70s.

None Omega 892 markings can be found carried by the Sea Vixens FAW2 during the late 60's, with the fox head and full moon (All weather Day/Night Interceptors which is why 890 & 892 had a nocturnal theme  ;) ).

Cheers

Hi Geoff,

yes, that's something I'll have to address in the backstory. My initial thought was to just replace the Phantom with a Buccaneer and keep the timeline intact, but there may be another option. Stay tuned... ;D

Don't get him riled with that Omega!
