Hey Guys, as You know, I'm Planning to build a Submarine Model using a Coffee Scoop as the Conning Tower, What I'd like to Know is, Would Anthracite Gray Work as the Hull Color? Still Unsure if it will Be Full Hull or Waterline. what Say You? thanks for Looking. Dan

Dizzyfugu

If it is a modern ship I'd go with simple black, but use a very dark grey wash and some dry brushing with slightly lighter dark grey (e .g. FS 36081) in order to highlight surface details. Not certain how dark Anthracite Gray is, but I found that what's called Dark Grey by any means normally is too bright, unless you want to use it on the upper sides as a cammo tone.

Anthracite Gray looks Almost Black in the Bottle. Thought i'd go 'GA' with it Being Planned as a WASP DSV! that Help? Dan

Test it on a bit of scrap first and see what it looks like. Try it over both black and grey primers, to see how much of a difference it makes. You can always adjust the final colour, as Dizzyfugu says, by using washes and drybrushing to make the details "pop".

As it is your model, you could paint it any colour you like, Dan, even bright yellow!  ;D ;D

Some of the RN's Oberons sported some quite exotic paint jobs, even as late as the last Gulf War IIRC.  Bright blue, splinter camouflage with blue, cream and black and other efforts to disguise them in the shallow waters of the Gulf.

HMS Trenchant spent some time wearing an interesting blue/grey camouflage scheme a few years ago (see pic below). She has now reverted back to the standard black, but HMS Torbay wore an overall dark blue colour for a while as well.

Wasn't there a "pink" submarine?

Honestly, it's the honest ones you have to watch out for!!!

Interesting pics gents  However only the Aussies could name a submarine after a creature that spends most of it's life asleep up a tree  ;D
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

We have Possums.

North America has Opossums.

Different animals entirely.

Our Possums are very active, nocturnal creatures.  I used to live in a house who's roof was part of their nightly highway to fruit trees further along the block.  Every evening you'd hear a big series of "thumps" as they jumped onto the roof, then a series of scratching as they  ran along and jumped onto some electric cables and crawled to the next tree.  Early morning, the same, in reverse.   Our backyard was full of the most dreadful hissing and coughing in Autumn during mating season.  They used to live in the top of a huge pine tree we had there.

I suspect the RN was scratching the bottom of the barrel for names starting with an "O" when they got to HMS Opossum.  ;D

Horrible bloody things, Possums. I spent some time in Bundaberg a few years back, and the damn things used to break in to the hostel at night to try and get into the kitchen to steal food. They also used to use the same areas as a toilet, of course, so the resultant mess was not a pleasant thing to wake up to.

Interestingly, the name Opossum has a significant history. It was first used in the Napoleonic era, and has actually been used six times: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Opossum

Mea Culpa. What really annoys me is that I actually know that, just didn't engage brain  :banghead:
