Cor, that brings back memories.  ;D

It was the first television programme I'd ever seen, a whole bunch of us kids gathered round the small B&W set on my Dad's CO's front room, amazing stuff.

But that flypast paled into insignificance besides the Royal Review at RAF Odiham later on, that really was AWESOME! I hope the Beeb do some re-coverage of that event.

After a bit of a search I found this Pathe News vid. Not the whole flypast but large chunks of it.

There's just a glimpse of my Dad's 47 Sqdn Hastings C2 on the static display behind a Meteor NF11 as well.  ;D

How long would a RAF Review take today?

About 10 mins..................

In Flypast magazine this month they have a feature on the Odiham Review and it mentions that the TOTAL number of aircraft in the RAF, FAA and AAC all together comes to 980 in the present day. Back in 1953 just slightly less than that number were involved in the static display and the flypast. My Mum, my middle brother and I were at Odiham in an enclosure for serving member's families and the flypast seemed to go on for EVER! Wave after wave of different aircraft types went by and I, being a big headed 'recognition expert' at age 11, was telling all and sundry what they were before the PA announcer told us.  ;D

Mike Lithgow's final pass in the Swift prototype was amazing, he was going much faster than the Hunter that preceded him and can't have been far off the Vmax for the aircraft. I only read from the magazine article y'day that he suffered a total engine failure shortly afterward and had to convert that speed into altitude to glide back to Chilbolton, luckily not that far away!

Great stuff.

Sure I've posted this before but I can't find it.  A link to the Silver Jubilee Review at Finningley, scroll down for the flypast:

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Is that 980 on charge or is that the oper?tional fleet, because a sizeable bunch of that total will be in store, deep maintenance, or used as technical training airframes?

I always hope for the best.

Much longer!!  The cunning plan is to include the Swordfishes from the FAA  Historic Flight.  If they are aviating into a brisk headwind, it will take them at least 25 minutes to fly past!!

Yes, that's all airframes on charge. What a lamentable state of affairs.

I noticed that the Chipmunks in the film clip about the '53 review had the same problem... ;D

Not quite as slow as the Sycamore that led the fly-past. It had a HUGE flag underneath it on a long rope and the poor Leonides engine was giving it's all just to stay in the air, never mind fly forwards as well!

And yes, that 980 does include all the ATC gliders and powered aircraft. I'm not so sure that it includes the AirTanker owned Voyagers though, it's a debatable point that they're 'part of the RAF'.

I sat on the flight decks of the lead VC-10s on the Battle of Britain and D-Day 50th Anniversary Flypasts.  The former included tanking Buccaneers in the Southwold hold at 2000-3000 ft amsl.

And there's a thing.  The route used for the Coronation Flypast is essentially that used ever since for major London flypasts.

To brisk a headwind and they'll be going backwards  Dad had some wonderfull stories of trying to persuade Swordfish to land on a carrier deck whilst he was serving on escort carriers
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.
