Did the Buran actually go into space ? I don't remember reading anything about it -----

One unmanned, automated flight in 1988.

Thanks Jon     but that long ago ?

That long ago.  Remember, the Berlin Wall came tumbling down in 89, and the breakup of the Warsaw Pact not much longer after that.

Found it shared to the Greatest Planes that Never Were page but initially posted by the Defence Technology. page. No credit given but that may not have been their fault.. or may have.

I know me some Dizzy work when I see it!!

Yup, saw it too, the guy who posted it on the group said he recognized it as being Thomas' work so he posted the Flickr link so there was no doubt of who built.

Drat!! I didn't want to read that gargantuan wall of text.  ;D

I did a control-F for "dizzy" and came up goose eggs, didn't think to search T's name. Good to know he gave credit after all! It really irks the utter piss out of me when people don't give credit or at least say, "hey, I couldn't figure out who did it, sorry!" ... or...something.

With a Tu-16 as a carrier, I'd rather place it in China?

Not necessarily - remember that the Tu-16 is a Soviet design as well ;D. And as best as I can discern, the orbiter model does bear contemporary Russian markings.

My best more or less educated guess is that due to the relative dearth of model kits of the four engine Myasishchev M-4, this is a twin engine Badger based approximation of the 3-MT/VM-T Atlant strategic airlift version of the Molot, which was used as a carrier aircraft for the Buran orbiter winged fuselage as well as large segments of the core stage of the Energia heavy lift launch vehicle before being replaced by the Antonov An-225 Mriya in 1989. I remember seeing a study in the late eighties/early nineties for an air launched orbital launch vehicle as well as a hypersonic demonstrator using the Atlant as a launch platform, but obviously nothing ever came of it.

Interesting where those pics pop up. I wasn't aware of this one.

I hope I find one of mine, completely by happenstance, some day.  ;D

I was simply "cruising around" when some folks got to posting pics of their F-20 builds. Needless to say, this is one of the most whiffed subjects so I wasn't disappointed!

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.
