A 'what-if' posted to our Facebook page: 1:700 USS Lexington class battle cruiser 'as modernized'.

Model by David Johnson.  He used an IHP Lexington resin hull, and superstructure from an Iowa-class BB and triple turrets from a Trumpeter Maryland.  (The Lexingtons had twin turrets, but hey, it's a 'what-if'!)

What a fascinating and... odd... creation those "flying aircraft carriers" were!

Looking at that image - how did they ever take off?  And, how could they ever land?  Those lifting rotors are just below the bottom of the hull and the hull itself is pretty clearly depicted as being an ocean going thing.  So, the idea of the craft coming to light upon water is pretty clear - yet those props would be submerged ere it did so.  That doesn't seem... conducive... for operations.

The stresses involved in trying to churn through that much water just to get the vessel lofted would be huge.  And landing the thing would be even worse!

They do look fantastic however!
Wherever you go, there you are!

"Fantastic" being the operative word, Madoc. They exist in a fantasy world where physics is slightly different to RW. ;)

After all, they couldn't fly like that in the RW, either.

No. Burnelli's designs were for "lifting body" type land planes.

And it did fly (with the car):

Mr.Creak,

I think you'll find that Madoc & I were referring to the image in Reply #142 by Flyer, not Reply #146 by the same author.

However, the airborne pic of the Burnelli is worth the mis-interpretation. Thanks!
