Shifting the cockpit rearward also gives room for a second engine.

Well, Academy also sells a Starfighter that makes the Matchbox one look accurate... Academy's NEW kits might be high quality, but their F-16 is the endlessly repopped Hasegawa's 1970's vintage YF-16 from the time when Hasegawa was less known for their quality and more for that they were among the first to make a kit of a new jet fighter, never mind if it was an early prototype, mock-up, or based on fuzzy spy photos (ie. their "MiG-23").

At least it is a better parts source for whiffing than the Mister/Mastercraft F-16 (itself a shoddy knockoff copy of Italeri F-16), in that Academy's burner can is not a smooth piece of plastic pipe...

Their early model MiG-21 is notorious too: much too short AND too fat is quite the achievement...

I like the look of that
I think putting the cockpit of most WW2 fighter aircraft back towards the tail improves their looks, not the best choice from piloting point of view but that matters not on models

I tried again with Mustangs keeping the beautiful Spit nose here, I like it yes:

Not sure about the camera position, given the sheer size of them there isn't much room behind the pilot and if placed in front, you lose the extra fuel tankage (and the wing fouls the image?

Started some detail work...a few marking decals and painted some grab handles...tamiya dark brown and black panel liner to panel line, filter and weather...created bullet hole damage to the glass and I quite like the effect...lots more to go but you can see where this one is headed
I'll be going back in for highlights but this is a nice base I think"
