I've now got a mental image of racing B17s retaining their waist guns and blasting chunks off each other as they tear round the course.
Maybe four engine racing bombers would be allowed to retain two of their defensive guns.  Which two being left to the team to decide.

Ball and top turrets would be better choices

For field of fire considerations maybe. But in terms of drag?

Probably not as draggy as having the waist positions open in the slipstream.

Depends what model of the B-17. 
I'd have thought the nose gun of the F model would be the 'slipperiest' - and you'd want to take out the guy in front of you, no? 
If you're going with the G model, then the two cheek guns would be the least drag inducing.

Depends what model of the B-17.

Rule 1: No nose or tail guns!

Rule 2: All allowable turrets must have a physical inhibitor preventing the firing of weapons in a 45⁰ arc to the left & right of the aircraft's centre-line!

Rule 3: Two (2) only self-loading rifles of not greater than 12.7mm (.50cal), or two (2) only automatic machine guns of not greater than 7.62mm (.30cal), or a combination of one (1) self-loading rifle of not greater than 12.7mm (.50cal) & one (1) only automatic machine gun of not greater than 7.62mm (.30cal) may be carried aboard at any time!


This means a more strategic approach needs to be taken towards overtaking & being overtaking, rather than just blasting away with a bunch of .50cals/20mm's at the opposition immediately ahead or astern of you.

Actually what you need is like how that 'fighter' experience outfit do it (IIRC one is called Air Combat USA), their aircraft have sensors placed around the airframe which get activated when a gun (actually a laser) shot hits one. This activates smoke coming from the 'hit' aircraft.

I was thinking along the same lines..., paintballs and then at the end of the race count up the shots then deduct, say, 0.10 second for every hit landed. Of course, counting the hits could become muddled but it's fun to think about.

No need to count, just top up the tanks and weigh the plane.  Deduct what it weighted before the race and et voila! Robert is your auntie's live-in lover.
Heavy paint may be a good idea.  maybe see if there is any old school "pre-lead ban" paint is lurking in the back of a government warehouse somewhere.

"Hi everyone, here is my latest What if" project. Base kit is the Fine Molds R2Y1 Keiun 1/72. The aircraft is in part of the air group of the carrier Taiho during the early 60s. Following the IJN naming convention i renamed it B8Y3 Keiun Kai. i changed the cockpit wit a resin one intended for the F-86 Sabre and sanded smooth the canopy. With plasticard i created airbrakes, arrestor hook and the weapon pylons. Weapons are from the Hasegawa sets and resin fuel tanks from Attack Squadron. Decals are from DXM intender for JASDF Phantoms.

Something that struck me while looking at another build yesterday.  Why, after sanding flats on wheels, don't people repaint the flat area black?
Or why not sand the flat before painting?

Just wondering.

Yes, me too. I try to do the repaint always, but now and then fall by the wayside and end up doing it years later.

The Keiun is nice, even though a bit overloaded for my personal taste.
