My father recalled I-16's flying down the streets, between the buildings, strafing German troops in Czechoslovakia late in the war.

His favourite Allied plane, however, was the P-38 - he used to sit on a hilltop during air raids, watching them strafing the railway yards after the bombers had dropped their loads.

That would have been an "interesting" childhood.  How old was he?

He was 11 in September 1939 (turned 12 in October), so 14/15 in 1942 (schools closed by the Germans & forced to work for rations), 17 on 8 May 1945 (he joined the resistance at 16 & was severely wounded during a bridge-blowing operation just before the end of the war (mortar schrapnel almost took off his head & left him without his front ... right? (I'll have to check a photo later) ... neck muscle).

Wow.  I don't know how I would have coped with all that coming down on me at that age.

Nor me. These stories need to be preserved, especially as we get farther away from the actual events. We must never forget what "ordinary people" found themselves capable of doing

The most effective sniper, ever, "was the second youngest of eight children in a Lutheran family of farmers. Before entering combat, Häyhä was a farmer, hunter, and excellent skier. At the age of 17, he joined the Finnish voluntary militia White Guard (Suojeluskunta) and was also successful in shooting sports in competitions in the Viipuri Province. His home was reportedly full of trophies for marksmanship.

He got hit pretty badly after just some months.

That'd make a terrific model, albeit expensive as you'd need at least two Caddys!  :o

Well, now, that's a coincidence. I saw a build the other day that's sort of along these lines. I guess I'll go ahead and post it:

By Mark Caterina, found on the "The Mediocre Modellers group."
