Posted on 'The Aviation Historian' FB page as a preview of the new issue:
"Here at TAH we don't make a regular habit of publishing "What-if?" articles, but this one by the late Melvyn Hiscock — about how rearward cockpits could have given photo-recce Spitfires a much longer range — has a pedigree stretching back to legendary test pilot Jeffrey Quill."

Shifting the cockpit rearward also gives room for a second engine.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

"So I bought this at Hobby Lobby on sale for $10.99 and thought it was a real bargain until I tried putting it together!!! The WORST kit I have ever laid hands on! Nothing fit! Quite a surprise since I thought Academy made quality kits."
Well, Academy also sells a Starfighter that makes the Matchbox one look accurate... Academy's NEW kits might be high quality, but their F-16 is the endlessly repopped Hasegawa's 1970's vintage YF-16 from the time when Hasegawa was less known for their quality and more for that they were among the first to make a kit of a new jet fighter, never mind if it was an early prototype, mock-up, or based on fuzzy spy photos (ie. their "MiG-23").

At least it is a better parts source for whiffing than the Mister/Mastercraft F-16 (itself a shoddy knockoff copy of Italeri F-16), in that Academy's burner can is not a smooth piece of plastic pipe...

Their early model MiG-21 is notorious too: much too short AND too fat is quite the achievement...

I like the look of that
I think putting the cockpit of most WW2 fighter aircraft back towards the tail improves their looks, not the best choice from piloting point of view but that matters not on models
I tried again with Mustangs keeping the beautiful Spit nose here, I like it yes: <_<

Not sure about the camera position, given the sheer size of them there isn't much room behind the pilot and if placed in front, you lose the extra fuel tankage (and the wing fouls the image?
Shifting the cockpit rearward also gives room for a second engine.

Looks nice and fast that way!

Is there more of this article somewhere? I can only see the first two pages.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model
