Turns out he had spotted the fuel tank assembly that id lost off of the Chally 2 I built a wile ago.  so that's gone back in the spare kit so it is complete again   yay!

A fuel tank assembly? Where does that go on a Chally 2 then? I'm not sure the one I'm building (The word 'building' is used here in its WIIDEST possible sense.....  :-\) has one of those. Or do you mean the two 45 gallon drums hanging sideways right on the slopey bit at the back?

They are, in fact, external fuel tanks, Kit.

I'm pretty sure the British still plumb theirs into the fuel system, as they did with the Matilda in WW2. The Soviets/Russians didn't/don't.

The British system is better, it means the tank can run on the external tanks until they're either shot up/off (if they're shot at all, being on the rear of the tank) or empty, after which they can run on the still-full internal tanks.

The ex-Soviet system means you run the tank on the internal fuel tanks until they get low, then you have to stop & hand pump the fuel from the external fuel tanks into the internal tanks, if they haven't been shot up/off (which was more likely as they were, generally, carried on the sides of the engine deck instead of the rear).

In both cases; diesel doesn't ignite very easily but, if it does, the fuel is outside the armoured hull & the burning fuel just drips/runs off onto the ground.

Kit yes one of the external 45 gal drums. they were added to the chally 1s during desert shield / storm, and were kept when they returned, as extra storage with some crews, and extra fuel with others. and were again added on the chally 2, old wombat  is as far as I know correct, they are droppable from inside the tank if needed.

Ah, OK. Thanks for that.

I've got pics of Chally 2s in my folder with 1,2 or none of those tanks, so I was wondering how vital they were to the tank's forward progress.  :-\

Not vital, just extremely useful for giving the tank a better range.

I'll have money that actually happened, especially during National Service days. The National Army Museum has some wonderful stories of some of the more comical, in hindsight, going's on in its National Service Gallery.  ;)

Good to hear, we (well, I anyway) have missed your stuff.

ive found another version of the GW vehicle that I had undercoated so im assembling that as well,   slow progress is being made, though one stumble came with the fact that wile I write down the paint I use for the camo patterns, one of them is no longer in production, and the pot I had, and its replacement from the same line have vanished  :banghead:. so im matching it to pots of Tamiya I have...  reasonably well, and confidant that the colours will match on anything going forward
If I have an attack of enthusiasm ( yeah right) I can add some mismatched panels on all the pre painted stuff I have  :o ;D

ideas for people to run off with  number N+1

the cheese plane.   delta wing with a big slot at the back for the flaps / blade  colour of you favourite flavour ( bonus points I guess if you can do a good set of holes for Jarlseburg, or blue veins for Stilton)  extra points if you can get an alliteration with the name

Mrs SP and I were hit by this idea wile doing cheese and crackers for tea  I have no idea where it came from  ;D :o

That would make for an interesting lunch.  Do Coles stock it?
