TSR2 trailing edges

The 1/72 scale Airfix kit has tapered, square edged trailing edges.

They're about 0.6 mm thick at the anhedral break and about 1.6 mm thick at the root. The stub trailing edges moulded into the fuselage are quite sharp though, the port side being sharper than the starboard. The real thing is anything BUT like that and has sharp trailing edges all the way from root to tip.

So the question is :- What's the best way to cure this problem? Scrape down the upper surface or the lower? In either case a lot of the finely moulded panel detail etc. will vanish. I'm tempted to scrape down the lower surface as it'll be less visible when the model is on show but I'm open to any suggestions.

After 35 readings and not a hint of a reply I took the bull by the horns and started on it.  ;D

As it happens there's hardly any engraving on the undersides so I scraped them down for much of the job, and then lightly filed the upper surfaces where there's more detail panel lines. It's almost impossible to file the undersides as the big flap actuator fairings get in the way, but scraping works just fine. It's not looking too bad now.

Thanks for that, I'll keep them in mind for my next TSR2 thanks, currently I have six in stock of various kinds.  :o

The current one is going to be SO 'off the wall' that the extra expenditure wouldn't really be justified............  ;)

saw this thread and had a quick gander after Yeovilton airday at my three in various stages of build.
DAGNAMMIT, you're right.
The wings are like doorstops next to the fuselage, when they should be razor thin(relatively that is)

I may thin the insides of both upper and lower wing halves on the next new build one just for accuracy or just to see how best to do it. I can always find use for the fuselage if I balls it up.
too old for a paper round, too young for me pensions, dammit, back to work then!

I scraped down the bottom of the flaps and then gave it a few light strokes of the file on the upper surface. That improved the shining hour somewhat, and a little differential filing of the tiny fairings on the fuselage itself matched things up. It turned out not to be too difficult, just time consuming, like almost everything else on the kit!

Does the 1/48 version have the same problem I wonder?

Unfortunately, despite the flaps being a single piece the edges are more akin the the side of a barn door and as aerodynamic  :banghead: :banghead:

Thanks for the info. Got two 1/72 kits in my stash , I was thinking of using the wings from a Heller Mirage I VA on one and the  wing from a B-66.

Another thing to keep in mind is this below, at the back end of the wing that goes over the fuselage, there's a couple of triangle shaped notches

which when attached to the fuselage ends up like this.

The problem though is on the underside, there's nothing there to fill these little triangles, so I glued some little tabs of styrene into the lower half of the wing, then trimmed them up to make it match the underside fuselage/wing connection. Saves a lot of messing around trying to fill and sand putty afterwards

I don't recall anything like that when I built my Time Warp TSR2 Robert.

Would it have made a difference if I'd have scraped down the underside of the wing moulding to within an inch of its life so that it sat properly in the well on top of the fuselage? And I carved lots of plastic away from that odd shaped gap in the trailing edge as that didn't fit worth a damn either.

Not sure about thinning it down because the top seems to stay quite flush with the next piece so wouldn't need it.  But here's another pic of what I mean, the arrow is pointing to the point where the gap would be if it wasn't filled in.  Unless I'm missing something in the build and not found what's supposed to be there ---

Mine was definitely NOT flush as bought and needed a LOT of thinning to get it to sit down properly. And I didn't have those gaps either.

It's starting to look as if there's more than one mould for these kits............
