In late 1945 early 1946 the RAAF swopped it's Spitfire Mk VIII's for new Mk XIV's. The Mk VIII's were then loaned over to the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army's Air Arm to replace their worn out P-39's. Sometime during their service the RAAF had overpainted the grey areas of the original camouflage with Australian versions of Dark Earth and Sky/Azure Blue.

These aircraft flew from bases in Sumatra during the 1946 campaign though by this stage there was very little opposition in the air so they claimed no kills at all, either in their air defence duties or on bomber escort missions. Towards the end of the campaign some aircraft had bomb racks fitted and they were used in the ground support role.

This was a fairly quick build inspired by one of Spinner's "screen shots". I used the Hasegawa Mk VIII straight out of the box. Paints are mainly by Lifecolor who do RAAF colours, and Xtracrylic. Markings came from a DP Casper sheet with the serials from a Ventura Spitfire and the Netherlands registration from a BPF letters/numbers sheet. The S by the way is the manufacturer (Supermarine) and the first digit 3 is for a fighter, followed by the actual aircrafts identity.

Anyway a nice quick, easy build. Just 3 pics as there's not much to show really, plus my cold is doing my head in

Captain Canada

Beautiful little build Chris and a nice story as well....no wonder there was little prey in the air with all those Spitfires about !

Like that one Chris.

That colour scheme is just different enough to make you think you've seen a piccie of one in a Kookaburra book somewhere/  ;D
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Like that one, too - and reminds me painfully that I have two Royal Netherlands East Indies Army's Air Arm projects on the list that would go well with this one...  :-\

TallEng

That's very good
I especially like the Sqn badge (Sumatran Rhino?)

The British have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved". Soon though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross". Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the Blitz in 1940 when tea supplies ran out for three weeks

Looks good - like the rhino badge.

like the rhino badge.

Thanks gents. Yup it's a Sumatran Rhino and the badge was worn on 2-VIG-V's Brewster B339C's. It's on the DP Casper "Battle of the Java Sea" sheet
