Re-engining with Griffons would sure be a nice change ! I love those big old propliners.....

Napier Nomad
R-R Eagle or Crecy
Bristol cerberus 3-row 27 cylinder radial  ;)

Was there such a beastie as the "Bristol Cerberus 3-row 27 cylinder radial"?

Well there was definitely a 3 row 21 cylinder radial, called a Deerhound.  Flight tested on a Whitley ----

It's summat I made up when thinking about a Brit alternate to the R-4360,
as that engine used R-2800 jugs I figured why not a big Bristol using
Centaurus jugs but retaining a 9-cylinder per row layout.
Thought about a 36-cylinder but that got ridiculous in terms of weight so
went 3-rows of 9 instead and decided Cerberus was an appropriate
name.

Captain Canada

My head's spinning from the thought of all that work !

No...it's just the beer.....

Sounds like an awesome plan to McColm !

Thinking inside the box, for a change a bomber version of the C-97 using parts from a Airfix B-29. Careful cutting and inserting the already made weapons bay ,I can use parts from the Airfix kit and re-glue the parts intended for  the B-50 build as I have bought one off eBay .
Not too sure if this hasn't been done before but no two builds are the same .

McColm

It's amazing I was just talking about the Hawkeye kit and whoosh there they appear as cheap as chips on eBay .

McColm

Back to the builds .
The Academy C-97 has changed appearance ,it now has parts from the Revell Br.1150 Atlantic including the weapons bay which is a better fit than the Airfix B-29 .(which has the wings from the  C-97 and the engines from two Revell Br.1150 Atlantics are going to make an AEW & C, stretched fuselage B-29.A Hawkeye  spin top to complete the build .)
The wings will come from one of the other KC -97 kits.

McColm

If I use the Revell Atlantic cockpit and attach it to the fuselage of the C-97then add the wings and engines from a Constellation it looks very similar to   that of the Lockheed R6V Constitution .Okay it's slightly smaller but I've got all the pieces in my stash .The USNavy flew both prototypes being the largest aircraft in service so far .

McColm

The Saunders-Roe "Dutchess" using six turbojets from the Airfix BAe Nimrod kits or Alleycat resin conversion .

Yes please!!  I have neither skill  nor budget for this task  but I'd love to see it done.
"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you....."
It  means that you read  the instruction sheet

McColm

The wings are from failed Nimrod projects in my stash although there can still get the odd kit at a reasonable price of you shop around .

McColm

I have joined two C-97 Academy kits together, just need to do the glazing and interior details .The wings have new engines from a Revell P-3C Orion, with some filler for the gaps .
See my Facebook page for pictures .

Captain Canada

Sounds good. I went looking on you FB page but to no avail....just the old pics you already had there.

Something I may have overlooked on the engine side of things is that the YC-97J/YC-137/YC-97H had the Pratt & Whitney YT34-P-5 turboprops with 5,700hp (4250-kW).
The Guppy had the T34 and Allison 501-D22C turboprops .
I haven't given up on the Griffon powered version ,just sourcing the engines and contra-rotating props .
