Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Still debating whether to put the tip tanks on. At my pace I'll probably make a decision by, oh, the return of Halley's comet.  ;D

Wings aren't glued yet. Since the decals are made for a KC-10A, some of them will not fit, so paint stands in after a lot of masking. White is Tamiya Fine White primer, the rest are Revell Aqua - black, Lufthansa blue, light blue, and light grey. Silver leading edges are AK True Metal paste.

Decal disaster.  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:

They looked good, and they were Hasegawa, so let's stick stars and bars on the wing.

Shattered.

To get an exact replacement means buying another kit. The Hasegawa KC-10A 1/200th scale is going for well over $100.

Fortunately I didn't try with an almost irreplacable decal, like the diagonal stripe in top of the fuselage. Although I was about to.

Sheet has now been given 2 liberal coats of Tamiya clear flat, might give it a third before trying with something from the sheet, that I won't need, on a piece of scrap.

I will never again trust a decal sheet.

PR19_Kit

Always, ALWAYS, ALWAYS clear spray Hasegawa decals, no matter how old they are.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

If you just need stars and bars, surely generic US national markings (possibly in a close, but different scale) might work?

yeah, how small do you need? I have a sheet from the Airfix USS Forrestal with loads of small insignia I'll never use. Want 'em?

FOUND SOME! Decal sheet from the ESCI A-4F has stars and bars almost dentical in size and style, so I tried ne of those... SHATTERED! Even worse than the Hasegawa ones, just dust specks. Fortunately there are 3 more on the sheet, so after about 26,340 coats of clear I'll try again. I had success with the originals, brought the sheet up from the basement painting studio a while ago, everything ok.

As can be seen in that close-up photo, the paintwork is a little rough. I love the Revell Aqua so far, but should have done more experimentation with it before committing to large jobs. I'm not about to strip and repaint, so it will have to do. The paint is rather thick, and is probably intended to be thinned a lot for airbrushing. I haven't yet tried to determine how thin it should be for brush-painting, but I'll keep at it.

This is the decal that had me scared, the 2-piece starred stripe on the upper fuselage. If either had shattered, it would probably be impossible to replace without getting another kit. Fortunately the clear coat seems to have done the job, and they seem to have survived the application of setting solution.
