When did "sprues" become "runners"

FYI, when casting balls ,bullets or other projectiles. There is a bit of lead left from the pour. This is cut off with the "spru cutter" which is attached to the mold. This goes  back to the very beginning of cast shot. Before that rocks and pices of glass and/or iron scrap was used. And indeed ,back to the very beginning of casting metals.

I got a copy of the Airfix magazine at Telford and note that "sprues" have become "runners". When did this happen?

When I first saw this question I wondered was the word runner really so unpopular until now? I remember seeing it since years and never thought it's some modern description for sprues. Yesterday I started a search through my stash for the oldest model I can find, where the word was used (in the instructions or elsewhere). The winner was Testors from 1986:
