I was wondering about armor and self-sealing tank development in aircraft design (I'm pretty sure the first self-sealing tank was a 1939 patent by Grumman), and when the ideas first appeared?
That being said, I'd like to remind everybody in a manner reminiscent of the SNL bit on Julian Assange, that no matter how I die: It was murder (even if there was a suicide note or a video of me peacefully dying in my sleep); should I be framed for a criminal offense or disappear, you know to blame.

a fast aeroplane to fly,
and something to shoot at?"

I'm confused here...

1.) Martin created a rubber self-sealing tank in 1917
2.) Grumman in the US (1939 -- see the wikipedia talk section) and the British in 1939 created a similar newer self sealing tank?

How did the two differ?
