Thought that especially the dapol kits would encourage loads of rail based whiffery.  Steam punk  trains, " Battle of the Atlantic class engines. Etc....

have had to stop work on my dapol based train whiff to respond to your post actually

Excellent news :)  Is it an 6-8-4 haunting engine for when you absolutely positively have  to shunt something.

Somewhere I've got some N scale American Whiffs, like an ultra-short E7 with a matching mini-box car and caboose. I'll see if I can find them.

Did some railwhiffery  several years ago, but it was main ly paint-based:  A Deltic in Midland red, a railcar in Cal-Mac livery and Evening Star in Caledonian Blue.   Somewhere there's an entire railway website based on  fictitious British liveries.

One of these days, I hope (eventually) to attempt a twin pacific Garrett.....details here when I get round to it.

The British have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved". Soon though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross". Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the Blitz in 1940 when tea supplies ran out for three weeks

Hm, I have an unbuilt Kitmaster Garrett in The Loft, and quite a few other unbuilt Kitmasters too, but the Garrett is the star.

I'm afraid it's been done in the real world more than once.

Not only did I spend 6-7 years working on a gas turbine powered train in the '70s but the New York Central line fitted an ex-B-47 twin engine pod onto the roof of a Budd RDC car in 1966 and persuaded it to reach 184 mph!

184 MPH ?  In that thing?? May we assume that the contract included a copious supply of fresh underwear for the driver??

Having done 152 mph aboard the APT-E in 1975 myself and seen the amount of work we did to ensure it stayed on the track over the preceding 5-6 years I tend to agree. I'm afraid that US standards of track laying fell far short of UK ones at that time and the RDC car still used its standard trucks and suspension!

Not whifs but I converted some years ago two HO Märklin NOHAB diesel-electric engines into real-world machines that did not exist as models: a Hungarian M61 in early, late livery with a Red Star on the nose (Totally anachronistic! Just the way I witnessed them in persona during childhood holidays) and a Norwegian Di.3 in late livery, with some extra details and a cabin door faired over (just like the real ones).

Here's a pic of a real Hungarian one - no joke!

It's not my picture, but as a weird coincidence it is the same machine I built/converted!

Almost perfect, except for the grills in front of the windows (these belong to Norwegian NOHABs - the basis for my conversion, a Märklin 3143)

Ahem..
When I registered in the forum, I had presented a few railway whiffs...

My father in laws 009 layout is heavily laced with Wifs, and he loves to blind side the joyless rail types, hes moded the DMU for his OO layout, and will laugh heartily if some one does go for it, ( hes added the small food and drink stand that him and my mum in law man occasionally on the Dean Forest line).
he was muttering a bought fairlying an African Mallet  ( 2 trains cut and shunt so that they share a common footplate and crew)  and had a far-away happy look in his eyes when he did.
