So it all started with this drawing:

Now, after a decent amount of time, I have almost completed building it.
Kits used:

Progress:

^Close-up of the wing. I actually screwed up cutting part of the Spitfire wing, so it has two different airfoils on port and starboard.

^showing the cranked dihedral, as well as the differing thicknesses of the outer wing sections

^port side of the P-51 fuselage trimmed to fit the Bf109G nose and Spitfire rudder. The starboard side has been trimmed to fit the Spitfire rudder as well.

^Almost fully assembled. The noticable step on the nose of the Mustang fuselage has been trimmed/sanded out.

^Showing off her lines
Not photographed: the painting and installation of the exhausts, painting and installation of cockpit, and painting of the landing gear. Gun pods from the 109G kit were also painted and installed.
I am struggling with choosing a livery for this, but I have narrowed it down to two:

A postwar Third Reich Kriegsmarine aircraft, stationed on the Udet aircraft carrier and an early Korean War-era Fleet Air Arm interceptor

Old Wombat

In all honesty, I prefer the original drawing to either but I guess NMF on such a serious chop-job is a bit awkward unless you're willing to put in a few weeks of PSR to clean up the surfaces.

As it's 2/3 allied, I'd make it the FAA bird.

This is a lovely looking bird, I am eager to see it when done.

I like the idea of a post war Kreigsmarine scheme, have you ever thought of adopting the Tornado IDS / Starfighter scheme the West Germans used? It may be a viable option.

Going to be finished in 2021 BEFORE I start any da*!#d new ones - CF-IDS Wolverine; Douglas Mawson; Bubba Wants a Fishin' Rig; NA F-100

So you've chopped up 3 kits. OK. When can we expect the other 2 kit-bashes?  ;) ;D

This reminds me of the bird that you can get from Unicraft that takes a Mustang a Stuka and a pair of Jumo jet engines. Supposedly it was made in Hungary in '44.  I like this a lot.

If people were not confused enough by this the FAA scheme would really do it for them! Or perhaps a Rumanian air force bird put together from the salvage of various crashes. You could use this logic to bash together the left overs.

Beautiful silhouettes! and turning them into plastic adds to the pleasure, thanks!

Just want to say this is on hold for a couple months (or whenever I can go home for longer than a weekend), since I'm at university. Just started my second semester.

That kitbashing has some serious "the Sky Crawlers" appeal.

Looking forward to see what becomes of it!

Remembering my own university days, you might find it worth having a box with a  simple kit and a few tools on the shelf in your room, as something to help you "switch off study mode" for an hour or so when an essay or other assignment is getting on top of you.  I can remember building an Airfix Dogfight Double RE8 and Walfisch as a distraction from essays on the Wars of the  Roses  MANY years ago........and NO!! you lot,   it wasn't so long ago that the RE8 was still  a contemporary aircraft , it just feels that way sometimes!

Best of luck with your own studies!

Now I could never, ever have imagined an RE8 being used to help you "switch off". You might want to switch off completely after tackling it, but that's about it

Yes it still gives me nightmares  :banghead:

The RE.8 is one of only two kits that I ever binned/trashed as unbuildable. The wing struts just wouldn't set right. The slow drying time of tube glue and youthful lack of patience were equally to blame. I built one two years ago, and this one looks damn good for a 1958 kit. The other kit that I deep-sixed was a Beechnut P-43 Lancer cottage-industry kit. I built simple models when I was in the Army overseas. I had a shoebox that contained a minimum of modeling supplies. It helped save my sanity.

The RE8 was such a "challenge"  that it was a considerable distraction from The Wars of the Roses!  I will admit, there were several occasions when it very nearly took flight from the window of a third floor room  in a hall of residence!
