Okay so I'm thinking about what to do with the 'spare' Xtrakit Scimitar that I have, and I got to musing......

I know the topic may have been discussed in a little more depth elsewhere, however .....

Would a minimum change Scimitar been of use (note - not of interest) to the RAF. It'd be somewhere between the Hunter and Canberra in capability I presume?

What would it have been designated, I can never quite understand why it remained the F.1 Scimitar, when surely S.1 or FB.1 or F(GR).1 or some such combination would have suited it based on the loads it could carry
Oh to be whiffing again :-(

I've often thought an RAF Scimitar would have been an excellent idea. It's payload/range would have been very useful, and the things that counted against it in naval service (size & landing speed on small carriers, basically) wouldn't have been a factor.

RAFG heavy fighter-bomber. Same role as the Phantoms had, but ten years earlier. And with guns, too!
Some of my models can be found on my Flickr album >>>HERE<<<

I like it. Would look awesome in the Phantom camo.

You could say that in your whif-world, the RAF/MoS got an early indication that the Swift was lemon and swapped the RAF order to Scimitars instead, giving them a light/heavy mix of Hunters and Scimitars rather than two similar types from different manufacturers. The natural side-effect of that scheme of course, would be a low-level recce Scimitar PR.5..... :wub:

They may also have been tempted to go for the improved Supermarine 576 " Super Scimitar ".

Now that would have been an interesting option if they had gone for it

Scimitar variants like Buccaneer variants were developed for the RCAF potential interest in the 50's so there is a strong basis for land based air force aircraft

Yes I agree the Super Scimitar is a good looking 'beast' (dare I call 'her' that ?!) but I unfortunately only have a 'normal' (un-super/sub-super!) Scimitar to play with and my whiffing skills are still only at the alternative paint schemes level

However I think the idea of a Scimitar as 'pre-replacement' (preplacement?) for RAFG Phantoms is definitely a possibility (is that a contradiction in terms?) A PR Scimitar alternative to the Swift also sounds good  ;D

Anyway got any thoughts on the second part of my original post - What would it have been designated, I can never quite understand why it remained the F.1 Scimitar, when surely S.1 or FB.1 or F(GR).1 or some such combination would have suited it based on the loads it could carry?

Well in theory FS.1 would have been "logical", but in practice, there have always been as many exceptions as rules changes so just about anything would be "explainable".

F = Fighter
S = Strike

I've read that S-for-Strike is a NATO thing, so the Scimitar's Red Beard capability should earn it that title. Having said that, the nuclear capable Phantoms, Jags and Harriers were "GRs" so your guess....... :unsure:

It would have been interesting if RAF Scimitars had deployed to Singapore as part of the Borneo confrontation.

Warning ...Ideas Overload!!! Too Many Kits, Too Many Alternative Schemes ..........Wibble!  :blink:

Captain Canada

Is that kit still available ? Saw it in my LHS awhile back but wasn't willing to fork out the $$$ for it...now I wished I had !

I was thinking FR like the Swift ? FGR is always cool, maybe just GR ?

Who knows !
