Only one regular RAF unit, No. 73sqn in Malta operated with Spitfire 22s and did so for less than a year before it re-equipped with Vampires in October 1948. As was their won't 73Sqn applied their markings to both sides of the fuselage roundels in much the same way as that applied to their Hurricanes during the war.
A small number of F Mk 22s were stripped of their camouflage and carried their squadron identity markings on both sides of the fuselage, it's not known if 73Sqn managed to do this to their aircraft in the short time they had them but......

The British have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved". Soon though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross". Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the Blitz in 1940 when tea supplies ran out for three weeks

'Tis but a simple whiff, Airfix Spitfire 22, the fuselage marking is the wing marking from the Airfix Gladiator
And of course Baremetal foil for the polished cowling. Kit roundels/fin flashes and stencils and serials from Xtradecal.

Indeed :thumbsup: it would be very tempting to use them on the new Airfix Lightning  :wub:
Just have to think of a design for the Fin/spine (it would have to be Natural metal with the colourful fin)

Yes it's a really good use of them. One I'd not thought of before, but it's definitely got the "little grey cells" whirling

One thing that made me scratch my head when thinking about it was that 73 Sqn's colours changed several times over the years.  The Gladiators wore yellow and blue, Tomahawks' two-tone blue, the famous Hurricane used red, yellow and blue before going back to blue and yellow with the camo'd Spitfires.  Later, they changed to a two-tone blue with Vampires, Venoms and Canberra's.  Then there's the change in role from a fighter squadron to a ground attack unit at the end of the war (and possibly there and back again early post-war?).

Which all boils down to you can pretty much choose any colour you want on a fighter or bomber and it all remains plausible!
