After the collapse of Turkey in August 1945 the Anglo/French forces quickly rushed into the ensuing vacuum and the Axis forces suddenly faced the nightmare of a new South Eastern front.

2nd attack squadron of the Royal Romanian Air Force had recently re-equipped with the Fw 190 F8 for use in the ground attack role and had been intended for use on the Eastern front.  It was now quickly switched to the southern Bulgarian front however.

I won't go into the details of what happened on that front as we all learned the details in our school history lessons. Needless to say it involved the Axis forces having to make major withdrawals from Russian territory in order not to be outflanked and have their extensive and fragile lines of communication cut off. This, as we all know, would eventually lead to the collapse of the Axis some 18 months or so latter.

Thus here we have a Royal Romanian AF Fw 190 F8. It's the new tool Airfix kit and goes together very well. It's not as nice a kit as the same companies recent Hurricane Mk I, which in my view is the best Airfix kit in terms of design and fit I have ever built, but it's good, one or two tricky fit issues but nothing serious. Paints are Xtracrylic for the late war German colour scheme and my usual mix for the finishing touches. Markings are from a M.P.M. IAR 80 for the national markings, the spares box for numbers etc. and the kit for stencil data. The rudder stripes are hand painted. All together an enjoyable build.

That looks like business Chris. Nicely done.

Nice one Chris ! The colours look awesome, and are really set off by the yellow trim and markings. Also like the way the undersides blend up into the tail....very well done !

I'd like to grab one of those kits myself. I do love the late mark 109s as well, and the Airfix kits are too cheap to pass up eh ?!

What colours did you use ? I'll write them down in my notes
CANADA KICKS arse !!!!

Nice but I have to admit I'm no fan of the kit - I don't think that the Revell one could be beaten apart from a new canopy.  There's something not quite right about the new Airfix one.

Must admit the canopy is my main complaint with the Revell kit and yes you are right there are a couple of niggles with this new tool

Underside RLM 76, uppers RLM 81 and 83 (note these are the Xtracrylic RLM numbers and I'm aware the green may not be correct)

So light blue/grey, dark brown and mid green

Another of those that looks right, nice job Chris.

What's the problems with this kit?
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

No serious problems Mossie, it's just that the cowl ring is not the best of fits and can be a bit of a struggle. The prop/spinner problem I had was down to me.

Having just built the new Hurricane previously (which is gorgeous) I was expecting the same quality, and it's not quite up there. Still good value for money, especially in this boxing which has both the F-8 and A-8 options
