I know I'm not the only one who wants to do this....

FAR148

Quick mock up with tape and then a little photoshopping. Maybe my next project   We'll see, got a ton of ideas running around in my head. I would move the wing back a bit about where it is in the image above. I would also move the gear into the fuselage, MiG-23 style. Frees up the wing for fuel and weapon

Purely visual, not worrying about hypothetical engineering.

Well....  Can't say I've ever wanted to do that to a Lightning, but now you mention it
Two things spring to mind... (Careful)  :o
One could use the Saab Draken's double delta layout? Minus the intakes in the wing, or...
use the Vulcan B2 wing as a template..
Just thoughts ... ;D

The British have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved". Soon though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross". Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the Blitz in 1940 when tea supplies ran out for three weeks

That looks surprisingly like an F-106 from that view. Where did the wings come from?
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Sort of something I went along with on this project

If I'm not building models, I'm out riding my dirtbike

That's kind of what I'm thinking. The wing is the lightning wing, just moved back and filled in via photoshop.

No keep the intakes and whack a large radar in the nose!

The Wooksta!

Use a TSR2 wing - the sweepback is the same and the Airfix one is in upper and lower halves to facilitate carving a wheel well bay.  The TSR2 isn't wasted - graft on a set of F14 wings for the proposed VG variant.

There's a drawing of the proposed delta Lightning in the Tony Buttler British Secret projects: Fighters since 1950.

Nice idea: I've been talking about something similar for ages, so it'll be interesting to see this one come together.

Re main wheels, why not have a Fairey Delta/Avro 720 style setup where the u/c legs attach to the wing near the roots and the wheels retract forwards and rotate 90 deg like a Skyhawk? This leaves the wing mostly free for fuel and weapons without the complications of trying to fold the u/c up into an already crowded fuselage.

The black tape on the mockup makes it look like a Chris Foss spaceship: how about a garish stripey colour scheme?

Re main wheels.  If you knew anything about Lightnings, you'd know you'd have a hard job trying to squeeze a 72nd scale Ant into the fuselage, let alone a full scale one as it's chock full of engines.  Hence the scab on fuel tank (they even used the flaps for fuel storage) and external cable ducts.

The proposed EE P.8 had a completely revised fuselage with area rule to accommodate the maingear.

Good food for thought

...just USE the Saab's air intakes and add a radar cone to the nose?

You might also place the wings lower, so that a shorter landing gear could be used? The belly tank could then be used for a weapon bay...  ;D

You can't change the wing position due to the unique layout and the positioning of the engines and associated air ducts (the spars pass through the spaces in between as the engines are staggered).

And using the belly tank for weapons when the aircraft is already very short legged as regards range is simply daft.

EE themselves did the design work for a Delta Lightning.  Again, read the Tony Buttler BSP: Fighters since 1950 and you'll get the relevant drawings.

Myself, I'm more minded towards a VG P8 (wish I knew where my half done one is, although I could cast another fuselage).  Or a P6 two seater - wonder where that old Airmodel Lightning T-bird conversion is?  And I'm thinking of more colour schemes for RAF Lightning T5A's...
