The Grumman C-2A Greyhound replacement

In the 'real world' the US Navy uses the Greyhound for a carrier onboard delivery (COD) aircraft. A decision on its replacement is expected in early 2015.
The front runners include: the Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey tiltrotor and the possibility of reopening the Greyhound production line for the third time, using developments from the Northrop Grumman E-2D.
However Lockheed has come up with a proposal to use surplus S-2B Viking, with a new centre, rear fuselage and ramp door known as the C-3.
Lockheed did offer the US-3A as a replacement back in the 1970s but only six were produced.
The C-3 lends itself to a Whiff as I have two 1/72 S-3B Vikings in the stash and the fuselage section from a Sea Dragon MH-53. Or I could use the fuselage halves from a Bristol Freighter.
The Fairey Rotodyne would be a good COD or even a kitbash F-27 with tiltrotors. The Bristol Freighter could also get the tiltrotor treatment.
(Yes I know, I should reduce my stash but I keep coming up with ideas to keep certain kits!)

There was also a real proposal for a tailless USN multi-purpose aircraft, with a fuselage pretty similar to the S-3.

I actually have a potential C-2 successor on the project list, inspired by build some time ago here - it will end up in USN low viz livery, though, and will lend itself to fit into this whiffy occasion.

I've done the Rotodyne as an RN COD for the Invincibles.
The V-22 is rather small for the COD role; perhaps a larger such plane, such as one of the proposed 4-rotor aircraft.
There are plenty of S-2s in stock.
And, of course, the Hercules has landed on and taken off from a carrier.
I believe there was even a proposal to use a DC-9, something I've thought of doing except I cannot find a DC-9 model.
In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

There was indeed, competing with a Fokker F-28 project no less. The latter has already been modelled here by Hobbes I think, but in 1/144 scale.

Trying to find a 1/72 DC9-30, which was the sub-type they based the USN COD project on, won't be easy. The only injection moulded kit of the DC9 in 1/72 was the old Aurora, later Revell I think, short fuselage DC9-10, and that's as rare as refined unobtamium! If there's a vacform available our own kitnut617 will know for sure.  ;D
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

There was also a proposal to use the BAe-146.

Yes, I've done the F-28. Still haven't quite finished it, but I hope to be able to do just that by this weekend.

Huh? Densil never told me he did one, and he's meant to be a mate too!
