Those of you who have been to recent UK shows will know that Mike McEvoy has a Hendon 1940 theme going. Well this is the first of my offerings for
it.

I've not fully thought through the "no war" scenario as I have to check that my memory of 30's history is accurate before I commit to paper. However basically when the Germans move into the Rhineland in 1936 the French and British call their bluff. After threatening to attack them the German's withdraw, as indeed they were under orders to do if there was any opposition. In fact this was a double bluff on the Franco/British side as they had neither the ability nor willpower to intervene. Anyway the German's withdraw, the Officer Corps is humiliated and forces Hitler from power and eventually there are fresh elections to the Reichstag. The French and British however are alarmed enough to kick off their rearmament progames and the 1940 show at Hendon is an ideal showcase for all that's new in the RAF and FAA as a result.

Fairey Battle of A Flight 12 Squadron RAF at the 1940 Hendon Air Show

It's the venerable Airfix kit and my trials and tribulations (not many not of my own making) are in my Blog on site.http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,35064.660.html Paints are a mixture of Halfords spray cans, Airfix, Lifecolor, GW and Xtracolour. The serials are from the kit, the rest of the markings from various Xtradecal and Model Decal sheets.

I have another Battle in the stash (MPM/SH kit) which may get built real world, but I have an itch to build a desert camouflaged one with a bright red spinner  ;D Why they didn't give her one is beyond me ?

My next Hendon 40 build involves turning a Defiant into a light day bomber for one of the Hart/Hind squadrons
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

As an aside why did RAF aircraft of the 30's have so many serials ? 2 on each side of the rear fuselage/tail and honking big ones under the wings. Had they lost some aircraft early on and decided "not again"

That is very beautiful, I do so like the Battle. Could be FAA'd to carry a Torpedo like a Kate.

That turned out nice  especially considering it's the old Airfix Kit.
There is something about 'Silver wings' that looks 'right'
And I too have wondered about the missing spinner on the Battle, I am sure it
Would improve its looks and add to its top speed ;D (at least it would look faster)

The British have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved". Soon though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross". Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the Blitz in 1940 when tea supplies ran out for three weeks

Looks very good in that scheme.

Very pretty indeed, Chris.

Officially make this a theme build - see what you get.  Plenty of scope for 'Silver Wings', I'm sure.

Now that's a neat idea
I've still got the rest of the Model Alliance wings of Silver  decal sheet- should be able to find something there ;D

The big 'H' have got Wings of Silver Pt. 2 on special offer ;)

Cracking job Chris, it will look great next to my Cyclone too.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

I'd not seen that photo of the prototype with a spinner, thankyou Caveman. It sits the aircraft and indeed she is one of the few that you can use the word "pretty" to describe.

I'll have a think about the Theme Build suggestion, any other takers ?

Thorvic

It has potential for a theme build.

Like the Battle BTW those 12 sqdn decals do look the part on the Battle

If you add in my Hawker Furys and silver Hurricane then we have the makings of a Theme Build for Telford. I'd like to see some other countries like a French Dewoitine or a shiny silver Heinkel 100 with a big red and black swastika or some USAAF P-35s....

Now that I like. Simple and effective Chris.

A couple of larger aircraft in NIVO would add to the scene too.
