I remember having a discussion with someone but don't think I put it on the board.....can anyone suggest a colour scheme for a Russian/Soviet naval jet fighter from a period of early to mid 70's please......? I was thinking of a similar scheme to a 'Forger' of a dark blue over a light blue or grey underside........if anyone does suggest anything can they include the paint colours as well please......many thanks......H

Don't know whether it's what you're looking for, but I always thoughts SPINNERS' MiG-27k sported a lovely scheme:

For other inspiration, maybe have a look around the Soviet types on "wings palette" - LINK!

Must, then, my projects bend to the iron yoke of a mechanical system? Is my soaring spirit to be chained down to the snail's pace of matter?

MiG-15 and MiG-17 fighters used by the Soviet Navy for the defence of naval bases were left in natural aluminium. Later land based strike aircraft such as the Su-17 Fitter and Su-25 Frogfoot tended to be left in their Air Force green/brown/tan schemes even if intended for maritime strike purposes.

The original Yak-36 Freehand experimental VTOL fighter was left natural metal, but when the operational Yak-38 Forgers were deployed they originally wore dark blue upper surfaces over dark green undersides:

Later these were repainted in a light grey over dark grey scheme. The profile below shows one of these together with what is said to be an experimental three tone dark blue/mid blue/light grey scheme. However, although this is taken from Yefim Gordon's "Soviet Naval Aviation 1946-1991", I don't believe that it is accurate - I've never seen a colour photo of this aircraft and it seems more likely to be a misinterpretation of a black and white photo of a Forger which was painted in the green/brown/sand scheme for trials in (I think) Afghanistan:

However, the colour scheme used by the Russian Navy Su-33 Flankers was very similar to that multi-colour Forger scheme.

The experimental Yak-141 Freestyle and the navalised MiG-29 were painted in overall light grey (but these were design bureau prototypes and not operational naval aircraft):

More recently, when the navalised MiG-29 was revived, it was painted in a dark grey over light grey scheme:

I've been considering this myself in connection with an Su-15 and I would be inclined to go with either the dark blue over dark green colours of the early Forgers or the three tone dark blue/blue/grey scheme.

Although, having said that, some naval Su-25s have appeared in various non-standard schemes such as brown or green over mid-grey and a black and white photo of a naval MiG-21 is often captioned as being in a three tone grey/blue scheme and so, at the end of the day, put a Soviet Navy flag decal on it and paint it in whatever colours you like best
