Some great stuff there Zac, many thanks for posting

Are the tanks real survivors or replicas ?

The tanks are replicas that run. Bloody noisy things they are, too! They have blank-firing MGs and pyro-equipped cannon. Both are products of Weta Workshop.

For the WW2 segment there was a replica German something (no-one said what it was and I didn't ask), and an original running M3 Stuart which lives 30min drive from me! The owner has another he's now restoring too.

the Hanomag halftrack is an original

The props team also built a panjandrum which laid down quite the smokescreen and ended up detonating rather spectacularly! No photos as I was sitting a little too far away and the phone wouldn't have done anything for it.

I'm sorry I didn't get any pics or video because I'm always slack-jawed in awe while it flies, but did I mention the V-1 replica?

That's a reproduction PzKpfw IV made by Weta, apparently. The "Hanomag" can't be an original SdKfz 251, though. That's a modified OT-810. They did a good job, but that running gear is distinctive.

Cheers,

Logan

Thanks Zac. Looking at it with those "tank riders" it looks slightly undersize ? Probably just the fact that in 100 years the guys have just got bigger. I've seen the ones at the Tank Museum at Bovington and am just filled with admiration for their crews.

New Zealand seems to be the land of the replica  ;) Must go some day for a tour

Thanks Logan, I don't know German armour and was going by the commentary.

Chris - I think they're 1:1. One thing that's surprised me about tanks after building a few kits is just how small they all are.

Also, on the subject of replicas: yeah you do! The replicas built by TVAL have new-built engines - only one of these replicas, the Snipe with Bentley rotary, made the trip to Omaka this time. They have an increasing amount of airworthy WW1 originals, too. Any trip to NZ should be timed to coincide with one of TVAL's summer flying weekends.

Ta. Yup some can be very small, almost tankette size, especially in the 20/30's. Although you then get some of the massive "land battleship" types which must have needed half the nations armoured corps personnel to man them  ;)

RIAT 17 on the Friday, so only a the warm up acts and the "canvas" wasn't very kind to the displays but hopefully Ive got something interesting in amongst the dross. Certainly felt privileged to see the Reds and Thunderbirds in formation!

I should have some pics tomorrow as Fifi the B-29 is at the Kankakee County Airport through Sunday. If you live in the area it will be worth the trip. She is on the way to Oskosh, Wisconsin for the big airshow there.

Great day at Kankakee County Airport! Watched the B-25, C-45, Stearman and T-6 give rides. Extra attraction was the P-51 that arrived around noon. I took lots of pics and a couple of videos. Some came out pretty good, see what you think.

Me at the Yellow Rose B-25.

C-45 in British markings.

Fifi's data plate.

Looks like R2D2 is flying the P-51! This shot was purely by accident.

Best part of the day was seeing a former B-25 crew chief get out of his wheel chair and climb up the ladder into the B-25. I thought he was going to climb all the way into the cockpit the way he was going. It was like he went back in time.
