Whist surfing ebay, I came across two adjacent models - the Airfix 1/72 Westland Whirlwind fighter and the Me-262 and the thought occurred "What if Westland re-engineered the Whirlwind with jet engines?" Probably not a feasible proposition in real world terms, but I suspect someone here has already thought of it and modeled it ;D

Are you sure it's not the Welkin J.8 Delanne that you're thinking of Joe ?  (scroll down a bit)

The Meteor is about twice as big as a Whirlwind   ;)

Nope i think Joe may have built a display model for R&D SIG and may be on a show report. The jet Whirlwind is mentioned on p208 os BSP:Fighters & Bombers 1935-50 by Tony Buttler before going on to cover the delanne designs.

Really? I seen a Meteor at a airshow once, it didn't seem all that big, but then I've never seen a Whirlwind for comparison. :-\

I've got both built as models so doing a comparison was easy.  BTW, there's no Whirlwind fighter in existence to go look at.

Captain Canada

Looks good, and a neat idea. I can see a few variants, Joe's example, one with the engines a bit further back, and one with a nose wheel.....

Not yet anyway. There's a bunch of Whirlie fans here in the UK are trying to rebuild one though!  :o

Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Cool, pity they are aiming for non-airworthy, once it is finished it will be yet another reason for me to try to get over to the UK for a look :banghead:

I think they're trying for "achievable". If I had the money, I'd certainly sponsor them - very big if, though. :-\
