Righto then ,,here;s a couple of mutants i have been playing with for a little while now ..
The first one is a E100 mortar ..kinda ended up with one from a Trumpeter Karl mortar kit i scored off a mate ..he didn't build it and trust me who ever did hadn't built anything this big before cause to say it was badly built is a understatement ,,so the mind went on one of its little trips and these are the results .

Now in WWII the Germans were planning to build this .

Didn't think it would be difficult to build ,, i got five spare tigers to play with but then i found this picture.

and today i found this one ..

Well having scored a complete but knackered Karl mortar and one very distressed K5 rail gun so you know what happened next ..this

Its still in the muck about stage to see how much work is ahead of me but the layout is there .
This is just to show you guys whats coming to this place soonish    ;D

Cheers

Flippin eck - what's the recoil on that ?  :o :o

One completely deaf crew after every shot ?

NARSES mate if its anything like the K5 rail gun when that fires its not that bad,,i think it has a recoil throw of 1200mm (47 inches ) so not much for such a big gun ... gotta love German engineering huh ?  ;D

The crew has to retreat to a bunker every time it fires.
This looks awesome, carry on!

Wow.. seriously impressive weapon there.

;D Well its time to get all techie on yours butts about the K5 Karl thingy ,,, since its the same gun and i will be using almost the same loading system the rate of fire should be 15 rounds for hour ,,now bad for a 280 mm round .
The crew should be fine standing 10 behind the vehicle cause when they fire the gun i have seen them standing on the gun and slightly of to the side of the mount ,,so ya they gonna be all good
I am glad that i dont have to try and move those rounds around they weight like 562 lbs (255 kgs) each

What was the barrel wear like on that gun ? Just wondering what its expected life expectancy was ?  Ever since I read about the WWI "Paris" gun and its special ammunition made to allow for barrel wear it's a question that's stuck in my mind when looking at these big guns.

As you say recoil isn't bad at all considering how big it is

Oh yeah i know what you mean ,, that gun had a different size round for every shot..now thats what you call reboring the barrel with every shot fired
The K5 was much better .. the barrel liner lasted 240-550 rounds ..so pretty good in all .

Were these basically naval guns on railway wheels or was there more to it than that?

Zenrat it was in the early days of rail guns ... ships main guns were prefect and in fact some of these smaller guns ( 14 inch ) were used as field guns sitting on a towed carriage and with no recoil system either .
Some of the early German 15cm rail guns were naval gun barrels but as things got more advanced better longer range guns were made .. like the 21 cm K12 E and of course the K5E guns .
Just in case some folks didnt know ,,the K is for Kanon and the E is for Eisenbahn or railway .
