For a group build of the 1899 Third Franco-Prussian War. A Lorainne class land crusier in progress. Still to be fitted are the sets of tracks underneath and the 37mm Hotchkiss guns on the bridge. All scratch-built in 1/160 scale - oh, how does one now add an image??

Hi Steve,

You'll have to link a pic from Photobucket or similar online storage.

I'll put the pic you posted on BTS up in my PB and link it.

Love the idea and the model but when was the 2nd Franco Prussian War ??? Enquiring minds need to know.

As for posting pictures. There are a couple of explanatory notes elsewhere on site. Here's the Photobucket one http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,32096.0.html

I suspect there is a step I'm missing still for posting an image. In the mean time, the model has a vac-formed hull, evergreen sheet for the deck, painted for wood grain effect. Fore turret is turned wood, aft turret turned acrylic rod. Gun barrels turned aluminium. Prieser 'N' gauge figures. It is for a group build for the Third Franco-Prussian War of 1899, a steampunk lark.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

I like it, I like it a lot! Can't wait to see if you do an explanation of the build process.

VERY nice but an awful lot of ironmongery to move 1 cannon and what looks like 3 Gatlings around the countryside. Surely they'd try to bung a couple of guns in the turret? Or have a secondary turret with a smaller piece in it? Maybe a couple of barbette mounted smaller calibre weapons on each of the hull sides, similar to the warships of the day?

Edit: Ooops, apologies, just realised the "tower" at the stern is actually a gun turret (where is the "blushes" emoticon?)...

The Lorainnes were pretty small as landcruisers go, and did have somewhat reduced armaments, and the Provence was particularly under-fitted. Most had two 8 in/20cm guns in the main and a 5 in/12cm in the secondary, while she had only a single 10 in/25cm and 4 in/10cm aft. The three 37mm Hotchkiss guns were standard. Multiple turrets with multiple guns and barbettes were for the much larger classes.

The model build started with a chunk of wood cut out to the outline of the hull, then used a router to make the concave tumblehome sides. Then used that to make a vac-formed plastic copy. The deck was Evergreen pre-scribed plastic sheet. The main turret was turned from wood, coated with CA glue for a solid smooth surface, the rear turret was turned out of acrylic rod. The guns were turned aluminium, the small sighting cupolas were turned sprue. The rest was built up with sheet and rod plastic. The track sets, not seen, were built-up from sheet plastic and then made cast resin copies.
