A couple of Century Series

First of all, I'm going to continue covering the F-105/SU-22 kitbash I started describing in the modernized SU-22 thread. It's far enough along to rate a thread of its own. Since I also have a F-101 that I am modernizing it seemed practical to combine them into one thread. Also this thread might stay a little more active using it to cover two projects.

The F-105/SU-22 started out like this:

I recently boxed in the missing area at the trailing edge of the F-105 wings.

I cut out the openings for the F-105 main gear. I wanted the ground clearance of the F-105 to keep centerline stores option open.

I'm debating whether to keep the super thick wing fences or carve them off and cut new thin ones. Photos of real SU-7/17/22s show them to be almost sheet metal thin. I just don't want to get bogged down in AMS.

The severed F-105 wings went to a good cause.

I'm also building a 50s style rocket ship from a 1/48th F-104 fuselage. Lots of putty and Aves in this project!

Also on the bench for far too long is the F-101. Its the Hasegawa 1/72nd scale kit with a nose from a Micro scale decal sheet from very long ago.

Its modernized with a 20mm Vulcan gun, J79 engines, F-4 pylons and fuel tanks with F-18 style LEXs. Additional lumps and bumps will be included. More pics to follow.

Also I've switched from photobucket to flickr so it will be a little while until I get that all figured out.

You would receive more applause with pictures instead of links I think. I use Photobucket for this, so here is your first (wondeful) picture:

I'm just so tired of photobucket's pop-up that won't go away no matter how many times I give it the X. Half the time when I hit the X the ad pops up any way!
Flickr is unclear as how to post the photo and not just the link. Any suggestions?

BTW, I removed the wing fences last night and will try to replace them with thin ones.

Well at least I've figured out how to post the thumbnail and a link from flickr. WIP

There is an arrow on the bottom right corner of the picture. When you hover over it it reads "share". When you click on it a popup comes up with some options. The choices are "HTML", "Link" and "BBCode". You want BBCode for posting in forums. Then you can select the size you want to post.

I finally figured out where to find the share buttons but I hadn't looked at the size options. This will work better now. Thanks for the help.

Here's the model with the fences removed.

Not as much damage to the surrounding area as I had feared. I have another of the SU-22 kits so I will use those wing fences as a pattern for the new ones. Although, the fenceless wings look pretty good too.

Here's a couple of shots of the modernized F-101.

Painting was in progress when I thought of adding the LEXs.
The LEXs have some further shaping to be done.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I added two new thin fences to the wings in place of the old thick ones. What do you think?

The other two fences are smaller but more complex. This could get challenging. I'm looking to add the two smaller pylons just ahead of the main gear also. AMS is creeping in.

Just got a call from the nearest LHS. My Perfect Plastic Putty that I ordered is in. Looking forward to trying it out.

The thin ones look good, personally I would not add anything more?

I'm going to try the other fences too. It gives it the whole Fitter look. Plus the third pylon on each side to hold a Sidewinder.

I keep thinking about a paint scheme. This Polish SU-22 looks great but there are so many awesome profiles and art work here its tough to choose.  :banghead:

Those are some SERIOUS wing fences!  :o
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)
