Well this is not what i was expecting ,,here's me talking about the next build ..a rather futuristic tank destroyer based on a Challenger 1 chassis and what am i building now ??
A WW2  Waffenträger auf pz. iv ,,, ok its a commission build so i am getting paid to build this and i thought i would shear it with you guys ,.,, sorry Guy ,,i know another German WW2 vehicle .
So lets get on with it then ... i went thru the boxes of spares and ripped out the ones i think will be a good start .. yeah that didnt last long .

And this is the chassis that i will start with

Least parts aint going to be a problem for this build

And so you guys will know what i am building ...this is what it looks like

Now this is not a simple as a build as you might think ..there is a lot of work here even tho i dont look like it ,,let me explain .
First off the chassis has to be lengthened as the suspension units on the Panzer IV are much closer together and these are spaced ,,the gun has to be lengthened also to make it a L61 gun and not the L55 which the kits use .
The entire chassis is more of a wedge than a block so i have to cut that down but i can only do that once the chassis has been lengthened then some very careful cutting will take place .
The suspension units are all being replaced with ones from a Tristar Panzer IV wheel set and they look beautiful when built along with the return rollers and road wheels all from the same set .
The drive sprockets and final drives will be from Dragon as will the idler wheels and tracks .

Now to really get into this ..i have already made a start with the gun ,,i took a alloy Krupp 128mm gun and machined it down to match the dia of the barrel i am going to join it too and drilled out the holes in the muzzle break to make them stand out more .

More to follow soon .

wow that looks good ( and im not keen on N**** armour)
the taper on the barrel is impressive I want sure it would be visible on the plastic but youve got it there, and it looks smooth and right

Well, Phill, as you're being paid for it, I won't complain. ;)

I'll just sit back & try to pick up a few new ideas & skills tips as you go.

Up date time ... first off cutting the  chassis and extending it and then cutting the angle ,, that went without a problem .

You can see in this pic how much longer the chassis is now over the stock one ,the eagle eyed amongst  you will notice the pieces glued to the hull to reshape the chassis ..i made the first cut lower deliberately to make it easier for me to figure out how high i needed to go to get the right angle ..yip its strange but it works for me

I also paid some attention to the gun as well .. thats now mounted and looking pretty damn mean .

But there has been even more work done ..right now having a wee problem sleeping so i did some more to this this morning ..its 2.20am here right now and starting to get tired so sleep might not be far away

Next i got to mount the return roller mounts and wheels .. but i have to wait for the putty to dry first and i am not going to make it super smooth or clean as there is going to be a light covering of mud and dirt .

More to follow soon guys .

There will be pics very soon .
Oh one thing i have decided to do it change the tracks ...i am going to use Friulmodel Winterketten  tracks so as you might have guessed .. yup its going to be in a winter camo paint job,,i think it will look pretty cool so i am going this way with it .

Been doing more work on my Waffenträger auf pz. iv and this is what is looks like so far .

I did some work on the engine cover ..replaced it with a resin one i found in the parts box .

Because of the shield i had to modify the ram mounts on the gun .

And just for a little bling .. some PE guards and other things to still be added which it will be soon enough .

More to follow soon .

Salt ,,, what sort of measurements are you looking for mate ??? there is a heap of them on this model and to be honest i will have to re measure it to give you the numbers you need ..which aint a problem for most of it   ;D

Impressed.

Well thought out mods and it certainly looks in era as it were.

Firing off centre would be a nice and rock n roller experience without stabilizers.. but as they say. Desperate times.........

Hey ya guys ,,, a little update for ya ,, pics tomorrow ..Oh Salt i will have those measurements you want too .
Got the Winterketten tracks made and its a brand i have never seen or used and i am quite happy with the results ..they look the part and went together without a single problem ..nothing at all and they are workable tracks too and in plastic ,,yup there's gonna be pics of those too .
At some point tomorrow i will be mounting the shields back on with new mounts and then its the small details to add like the tool holders ..tools ( gotta find those ) and a lot of other small details which will bring this model to life .
I got my brand new compressor and very soon ,,it will be time to give it a work out on this thing  ;D

More to follow tomorrow .

Well as kinda promised here are the pics and some measurements for Salt  ;D
First off the tracks ..

And the two hundred million little sprues i had to remove the tracks from ...

Before you ask ...yes it did take ages to removed all those 220 links ,6 cuts per track link .. do the math  :banghead:
Now for the end result   <_<

Did a little work on the track guard as well ..give it a more used look and there is more to go on that yet too.

Finally got around to the gun mount and the exhaust too ..

Now for Salt's little message  <_<
The chassis is lengthened by 21 mm  (0.844 in )
The chassis has to be cut down at the rear to  17.5 mm (0.690 in )
Suspension mounts are moved further apart to 25.5 mm ( 1.0 in )
To make life easy the road wheels should have a 6.5 mm ( 0.25 in ) gap between them and the first suspension unit ( near the drive sprocket ) is mounted in its original position .
Anything else mate please just ask

More soon guys

NARSES2

I can just imagine some modern day monk sitting in his cubicle removing those tracks from the sprues as some form of penance ? And it says Easy Build on the box ??? Possibly but time consuming.

I admire the patience of those who can use this stuff
