Named, like most Landing Ships, Dock, after a city- in this case Ponce (Pon-say), PR.

To paraphrase Tom Clancy (from Red Storm Rising, at least we don't name ships after our Mothers in law

Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

I always felt sorry for those posted to the Flower class corvette HMS Pansy. They would need to be as hard as nails to prevent any ribbing in the bar.
I always hope for the best.
Unfortunately,

Never mind HMS Pansy, what about the RN's Gay-class patrol boats?

Gay Bruiser, Gay Charger, Gay Cavalier... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay-class_fast_patrol_boat   ;D

Gay Archer featured in the IPMS magazine a couple of years ago, had been crewed by a Conservative minister IIRC.

Funny in retrospect, but of course, they pre-dated the change in the popular usage of the word 'gay'.
