Have just finished a superb alt history novel called Dominion, by CJ Sansom. Halifax succeeds Chamberlain in 1940 instead of Churchill, and surrenders after Dunkirk. Set in 1952, Britain is basically a Fascist thrall state to a Germany that rules Europe. Excellent spy thriller story, highly recommended. If you liked Fatherland, this is, IMO, better. :)

Just got this from the book depository uk
Focke Wulf FW190 Vol 3  1944-45
The Authors are J Richard Smith & Eddie J Creek
So you know its going to be good  :thumbsup:
Trouble is its approaching arm and a leg territory price wise :-\
And volumes 1 or 2 would require serious surgery to afford.
So I guess I'll just stick with this one, loads of words an pictures an profiles...

The British have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved". Soon though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross". Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the Blitz in 1940 when tea supplies ran out for three weeks

This is a very good story with a great sense of feeling for the time. Paranoia and patriotism go hand in hand thru the smog filled streets of London.  :thumbsup:

I read 'Dominion' a couple of months ago and I was pretty impressed as well.

Mind you, I'm glad I didn't live in that world!
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

"Down To The Sea In Ships" by Horatio Clare. Suuuuuperb travelogue, on a Maersk super-container ship from Suffolk to the Far East and on to Western USA. Writing at its best with magnificent personal, mechanical, geographical and natural history observations. Thoroughly recommend  to even those that think "What....?"

I've just found that Haynes do an 'Owner's Manual' on an AA/FD dragster!  :thumbsup: ;D :lol:

That reminds me, I have the Haynes Wallace & Grommit Manual.  I must get round to reading it.

Aircraft D-AOBE is a Messerschmitt Bf 162. Never heard of it? Nor had I till now!  :unsure:

It was a competitor to the Ju-88 and Hs-127, first flew in February 1937, only existed in prototype form and was promoted as the Messerschmitt Jaguar. Used for towing the Me163 on test flights.

The Bf162 was designed to utilise the Bf110's wings and tail with a new, three crew compartment and internal bomb-bay fuselage.   It lost out to the Ju88 as the new Schnellbomber.  Of the several prototypes under construction IIRC two were completed and the rest converted back to Bf110 production.

Chris, I've barely look at Empire of the Sikhs but it looks quite interesting.  It is next on the pile to be read.  :thumbsup:

Croydon Airport and the Battle For Britain 1939-1940

A small booklet which details all that went on at London Airport when it became RAF Croydon and the Aerodrome Hotel being covered in camo netting and used as RAF offices. Foreword by Bob Stanford-Tuck (who did rather well in the war ;) ) who was president of the airport society when this was written in 1984.

Lots of fascinating local stories such as an ME109 being chased down Purley Way at near-zero feet and of Flt Sgt 'Tich' Haverstock who needed two rubber pillows under his seat so he could see over the instrument panel of his Spitfire!
The control tower had direct phone lines to Tempelhof and Le Bourget, imagine the chaps surprise when he tested the phone to Tempelhof in 1940 and actually got a reply in German  :o

The photos are great too, showing the motley fleet of civilian airliners that were impressed into RAF colours. Ranging from AW Ensigns to HP.42s and the occasional Ju-52, they even show the body of a scrapped HP.42 in use as a squadron office.
