Would that still apply if you removed the turret ? I ask because one of my MPM examples is slated as a single seat light bomber with bomb cells in the wings

That would improve it a lot Chris, that turret must have weighed a fair proportion of the overall weight of the aircraft.

Comparative figures :-

Hurricane (IIC) :- Wing area = 257.5 sq ft Weight max = 7670 lbs Wing Loading = 29.8 lb/Sq ft

Spitfire (Vb) :- Wing area = 242.1 sq ft Weight max = 6622 lbs Wing Loading = 27.4 lb/Sq ft

Defiant (Mk I) :- Wing area = 250.0 sq ft Weight max = 8600 lbs Wing Loading = 34.4 lb/Sq ft

And all that added weight of the Defiant is in the structure, it didn't carry more fuel etc. apart from the extra weight of the gunner.

According to the Book "British Aircraft Armament Vol1" a Bolton Paul type A 11D turret weighed 373lb (170kg) empty and 621lb (282kg) armed.

This reduces the weight of the aircraft to 7979lb without anything else being removed or altered. Thus the wing loading becomes ....

Wing area = 250.0 sq ft Weight max = 7979 lbs Wing Loading = 31.9 lb/Sq ft which is an improvement of roughly 2.5lb/ft

Still heavier than a Spitfire or Hurricane and the wing loading is 15% higher than a Hurricane. I suspect the structure supporting the turret and the retractable fairings weighed a fair bit that wasn't accounted for in the turret weight itself.

That's correct Kit. The only info I had was for the turret with 600 rounds for each of the guns.

1/72 Hasegawa Avenger
1/72 P-47
1/72 H3

Score! Went to my closest real hobby shop, Denbeigh Hobbies, Newport News, Virginia, USA for a 1/72 Avenger.  Planned WHIF, but I needed a 4 bladed prop, so what do I see on the bargain table, but a cheap P-47.  Perfect.  And then I eyed a $5 US "already started"  H-3.  Was expecting a kid started, garish brush painted job, but hey for 5 dollars, I took the risk....

Opened the H-3....

The person had scratched up a cabin floor, overhead, engine compartment, perfectly installed fuselage ribs and the kit had a second full sprue of rotors, sponsons and clear parts.  Lots of extra WHIF stuff!

Unicraft Blohm und Voss P.188.02

Yeah, I know, but tax rebate (£760.00) + man who likes spending money on obscure resin + Blohm und Voss... You get the picture.

It looks like this

Link to a French website showing Unicraft's Bv P.188.04.   And how far out it is shape wise and just how much work is required to get it together.

Kit/Gondor thanks for the info re Defiant weights

Mossie thanks for the info on the BP P.96  Given me some food for thought. My second MPM defiant was originaly slated for a naval version (replacement/instead of the Roc). I may well use a second Airfix kit for that and the MPM one as a Sabre engine variant. I have the engine  but I also have loads of plans and ideas

Lee. I'm saying nothing other then I love W wings and B&V, so best of luck with the P188. I have a Unicraft 188.04 in the stash but every time I open the box I chicken out.  One day, one day

BTW anyone else notice Unicraft website's had a bit of a redesign. Kits now in alphabetical order of manufacturer now

From my LHS, well as L as possible, means 21 miles away in my case, an Airfix Blenheim Mk. I kit. Yes, I KNOW I have three FROG Mk. Is in The Loft and I need another kit like I need a spare foot, but it seemed a good idea at the time.

It certainly looks impressive and I've already got one Whiff in mind for it, and that involves at least one of the FROG Mk. Is as well. And no, it won't have longer wings!

Well............it may do...........  ;)

Last bit on the Defiant I promise but the April Airfix magazine has an article on the aircraft as well as the build. Anyway apparently the Air Sea Rescue version had the air drop dingy fitted to racks originally intended for bombs so that answers my bomb carriage thought.  It also mentions the use of Defiant's in the electronic warfare role. Used to jam German raiders. Another "I never knew that" moment.

Just hoping someone brings out a tropical filter for the kit as I think it makes an attractive option.

fitted with a device called mandrel iirc. I am tempted to buy another of these at Bolton tomorrow.

anyhow, rehomed this morning from antics in Coventry......

2off 1/72 Mistercraft Hunter F6
2off 1/72 Mistercraft AAC Lynx

these are of polish origin and have something to do with olimp models. the hunter is probably a FGA9 and has decals a bit similar
to the RoG kit of the same, but they aren't good quality. the moulds are basic and I remind me of the frog/novo FGA9 but with
sidewinders on the sprues. the westland AAC lynx is looking rather good, no idea whose moulds it is but seems to have different
tailbooms, a good selection of weapons, my kit had two sets of clear parts, basic looking desert filters and best of all as I've never
seen it in a kit before is the ball shaped surveillance dome fitted to some lynx for use in northern Ireland on the fuselage side.

very good value at £6.50 each.

I've a feeling I *might* have it on a mould that I was given.
