In all honesty I find it quicker and easier to paint the hubs first and then use a cocktail stick to "run" paint into the defined edge between hub and tyre (assuming there is one) then paint the rest of the tyre as per normal.

Ooooh, that's a good idea, I'll give that a go too. Thanks for the tip.

No modelling today.  No time.  Work, shopping (trivial things like food, not necessities like models, paint, glue etc), visit to the back cracker for my routine adjustment and then I slaved over a hot oven baking a huge pineapple upside down cake.

If there is a well defined edge then well thinned paint will just flow around the hub.

Flippin' Ada. Your other half got a bargain when she took you out of the pound. Hope she realises ?  ;)
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I do keep pointing that out...

1/72 wheel masks are a total PitA to put on (especially if you have my dislike of masking) but the result and the ease with which it was obtained were prolly worth it.

And...

...we're off.
In 24 hours or so Mrs z and I depart on a months holiday.
Road trip through Holland, Belgium, France & Belgium and then by train to the UK.
I'll endeavour to look in here while we're away but you know how it is... ;D
Cosford is on the itinerary plus any other museums of interest I can conspire to find are close to our route from Amsterdam to The Dordogne to Brussels.
We won't be in London on July 10th for the RAF flypast but I have managed to plan to travel from Brussels to Manchester by rail on the day of the Soccer World Cup final - could be a good thing or a bad thing depending who is involved.

How true.

Well enjoy your holidays.

If your going to do that North Eastern France/Belgium/Netherlands triangle then keep an eye open for the historical. It's all over the place and goes back millenia

By the way it's "The FOOTBALL World Cup Final". That "S" word is one of the few left that still grates with me it's such an artificial, middle class one

Football = Aussie Rules mate.  You know, the sport where a score only counts if the last thing to hit the ball was a foot.
I could call it Kickball instead if you like?   ;D

With you on the history.  On previous trips we've visited Flanders locations relevant to Mrs z's rellies (mine all managed to avoid serving on the Western Front), looked in at Quatre Bras and followed Guderian's route through the Ardenne.

I spent one night in Bastogne on a very wet evening with some American friends who's father had fought in "the Bulge" and they were stunned by what it was like in mid-summer

Two things...

Wheel mask?  Have I been missing out all this time painting the things by hand?! Easy enough when there is a nice, defined rim.... not so much on softly molded wheels. I can only paint those during the "sweet spot" hours of the day after lunch but before late evening.  ;D ;D

I have a Bri'ish buddy that calls American football "hand-egg."  ;D   I rather like it.   Go Cowboys!!!!!

The whirly bird looks great!!! I've been attempting to hijack your idea and do something similar, only with a Chinook, but, predictably, I can't find any in 1/144.

Well, I guess that's three things. . .

Eduard canopy masks, and possibly other makes, come with wheel masks as well. You get masks to allow you to either paint the hub, mask it and paint the tyre or paint the tyre, mask it and paint the hub. In 1/72 both are  :banghead: and whilst I'll use canopy masks I leave the wheel ones on the sheet.

Hmmm, I painted the whole thing black then masked the tyre and dry brushed the hub silver.
But yes. PitA putting the little doughnut of masking stuff in place.

Bouillon.  It was one of Guderian's HQs during the Blitzkreig and has a f'in awesome castle draped along a ridge like a sleeping dragon.  Godefroy de Bouillon was one of the leaders of the first crusade.
It is also the place where I accidentally ordered andouillettes (tripe sausages) which were disgusting but which I forced myself to eat as I was too proud to admit I had made a mistake.  The Riesling sauce was nice though.

Interesting! I'm going to buy some of those masks one day. I keep meaning to but always seem to forget. I've always thought the sheets seemed to have more stickers on them that what was necessary for windows, know I know why.

Save 'em up for a truly unique camo pattern.

Revell do, or did, a very nice 1/144 Chinook in an RAF scheme.

I've got four of them, but I'm afraid their earmarked for my decades old build of the MV Atlantic Conveyor.

On the other hand I could possibly re-mould a fuselage for one of them as three of them will be under tarpaulins anyway.........  ;D
