I don't think I've ever found any paint with "wood" in it's name to bear any resemblance to wood I've seen ?

Many years ago I got some wood grain transfer sheets intended for WWI German types, Albatross's etc and that's probably the best ready use material I've used.

I've seen a few people use Tamiya Deck Tan and then complain about the
colour, what they don't know is that it's a good approximation of the colour
of the linoleum deck covering used in various places on IJN ships.
;D

New-laid vs. holystoned vs. aged teak decks all look decidedly different and none
of the available tans/browns captures the look. The pitch that pays the seams
also changes quite a bit in appearance, going from black to dark gray to mid-gray,
the latter often looking the darkest because it's against silvered planks.

A wash to fill any engraved seams on a model greatly improves the look,
or if the seams are raised, and the kit is moulded in black, a gentle rubdown
to remove the paint also works.

BTW caulking and paying seams, deck and hull, sucks, even with modern
tube caulks.
 :banghead:

I would imagine caulking a deck is a real crippler on ones back and knees.

I was thinking something like that.  Colour names are weird enough as it is before the military get involved in the process.
On the Sea Witch detail is raised and the decks are moulded in brown.  I think i'm going to give it a light grey wash (to replicate some silvering and make it patchy) and then try and rub the paint off the raised caulk.  It's 1/96 so i'm not going toothier trying to put down woodgrain effect.
This is the first ship of this size I have built so it's very much a process of discovery.

Off to a funeral today.  My former next door neighbour.  A nice lady who didn't deserve what life served up to her.

It is indeed a pain, especially using the traditional method of banging oakum into the seams
with caulking irons and mallet, and then following up with the goop.

I took another look at the paint I bought for the Sea Witch's deck.  It isn't Wooden Deck Tan (although I do have a pot of the Tamiya version of that which I use for skin) but is in fact Deck Tan.  This explains why it doesn't look like wood.
Anyway, I lightly sanded the decks to reveal the raised detail and then gave them a wash of burnt sienna oil paint which has left them looking nicely decky.
If I were building this for myself I might have invested in a wooden deck set for it.  However, I am not.  It's for my Brother in Law who thinks he has spent enough money already.

He really doesn't understand model building, does he. ;)

No.  But if it was a piece of masonic memorabilia...

1140 Sunday.  I am just off to the shed to poke the crackley paint on the Rotodyne with my finger and hopefully finish off the Fairlady.
I've also been thinking about the 1 week build.  After watching Star Wars and Empire last night I am drawn to a T-33 with Rebel Alliance markings.

And i've worked out what colours I used previously (I think) and started painting the Royce.
